XPS M1210 Overheat

You know I reloaded windows after this screen shot the problem remains. It seems that Speedstep isn't down clocking my cpu. I don't know What the F*** to do anymore. Installed speed fan and ranning fan at full speed. Brings temps down (but I'd like it to run like it use too). Idle is 54C on cpu and 70C on video card (without speedfan). Idle 41C and 48C (with speedfan on high). That's what it shows for normal.

Anyone have a solution? I've opened my machine and cleaned it out. Still the same. Seems to be a software issue.

System: Core Duo T2500 2ghz, 2 gigs of ram 667, 160 Hiatchi Travelstar 5400rpm, Dvd burner, A/V package, 5700 EVDO, Intel 3495, Bluetooth, Geforce 7400 go.

In a nutshell I'm pissed.

I would say you have a heatsink misalignment problem if it is under warranty call dell because its no an easy fix, I've read on numerious forums people with m1210's with this problem but not very many and it usually is a faulty attachment of the heatsink

THe only suggestion I can provide is to pull off the CPU & GPU HS & replace the current thermal tape ( not that effective) with AS5.

what are your enviromental conditions (room temp/placement of the laptop)?

Is there plenty of ventilation under the machine?

I have the machine on a coffee table in the living room. The heater is set to about 65 or so. The temp on the A/C wall unit thing says 70. At the office the A/C runs at a cool 65 24/7. Is there a tutorial on how to dismantle this machine, as in what do I need to remove on the machine along with screws.

I have never had any problems with my M1210 overheating... in fact it runs about 10 degrees cooler than my E1505 did... and mine has the T7200 core 2 duo and a 7200RPM hdd, so if yours is overheating on a constant basis then there must be something seriously wrong...

Did you mess with speedstep in the BIOS at all?

have you verified that when you are "idle" nothing is runnign in the background (SETI...etc)

Nothing is running in the background. This is a fresh install of XP. I went ahead in to bios and turned speedstep off to see if the clock would go down. Nope still max speed. On or Off it's not making a difference. I think when I come back from New Orleans, I'm just going to send it in for servicing. My machine is roughly 8 months old. An it's also the main machine at my home along with the business travels. Wear and tear? I don't know. The other hottest part of this machine is the wifi/evdo compartment.

On that note there was someone else on the support forum on dell that reported the same thing. He got ignored, figures. So I saw how he was treated and decided to post here knowing I'd get a respond. But the guy that posted had the same exact config I did and the same exact problem.

what are you using to minitor the processor speed? Have you ever tried NHC? (Notebook Hardware Control)

It monitors & controls CPU speeds & temps.

If you look at my first post. It shows I was running NHC. I changed the settings from 1ghz to 2 ghz too Dynamic. Makes no difference.

I am guessing you are talking about the image link.. I could not load it so therew was no way for me to see what you have running

set NHS to max battery on AC & bat power, unplug the power & tell me if it is dropping down.

Oddly with all this heat. My cpu and video card are the hottest. But the chipset is only at 25C.

Results of what you told me to do

Is that a normal temp? The fan stays on low it seems.

My m120 is also kind of overheating I get constant advises fro m NHC saying my CPU is reachin 80°C...
I think I found the problem but I don't know how to fix it..

Everyonce in a while I find that a RunDll ior PCMService s taking 50% - 70% of my t7200 so it is running high even when I'm just surfing the web... so I just close it.. but after a while it reloads..

I've checked for all kind of malware but the is nothing... I have XP MCE '05... maybe a Windows update wrong fix?? This is a recent issue.... and I also reintalled XP and nothing happened... What could be happening??
that has still quite warm.. shoud be in the 30's... I would suggest you wither open the laptop up using the earlier service manual link I provided or call dell & explain that te CPU & GPU are overheating

Yea it pretty much start happening here after windows update. Other than that before that the machine was excellent. But my cpu is at 0 Percent and 1ghz in most of these instances.

i applied as5 on my cpu and gpu and im idling ast 48/50 cpu and 50/52 gpu
at load i get up to 75C on cpu and gpu after running atitool gets hot as 75ish also

Did you update to BIOS A07? I did that and my computer was overheating like CRAZY. There's a new BIOS at the dell site to fix it I think, it's like a second version of A07 that doesn't overheat. Check it out, worked for me.
