Ok here is Item numbers on my order form.

#UP755 Description: PAD,CLG,PSX,18X18X0.2,CPU,PORT,PG978 Replace by part UP755 (Thermal pad and heat stuff like artic silver sorta)

#MJ059 Description: FAN;700x65x12;5V;CPU;M1210

#UH112 ASSY;HTSNK;PGA;DISCRT;M1210

The fan is a little bit louder then my old one. As in when it blows air, like it's not a gentle breeze you actually feel it. On high it just blows so much air

So, I talked to Dell and the agreed to replace my heatsink and the fan... Hope it gets resolved... Thanks to all...

I think there is a problem in the BIOS that kicked off with A06 (the big Vista update). Since then my M1210 has been freezing and slowing down after 30 minutes of high CPU activity. My CPU monitor says both cores are running at max, but I'm only surfing! (T7200 btw)

I'm guessing the CPU is throttling, although even at max load i8kfangui reports only 70 degrees.

I'm going to see if I can find A04 (the BIOS my laptop shipped with) and see if that fixes things. I have a feeling that the BIOS settings for the CPU temp monitor are incorrect.

Do you really thinks the BIOS is only reporting higher temps and not really getting hot??

'Cause I really think the laptop is a lot hotter...

Although since the BIOS update (or around it) I've noticed than a certain rundll32 suddenly opens in process manager than takes about 60% or 70% of the processor even when I'm only surfing the internet... If close it, the system becomes inestable... I've checked for virus, malware, updated all definition and everything and there is no malware of any kind. This could be heating the processor.. but I don't really know...

Do you guys have noticed anything alike??

It is getting hotter. I am suggesting that the laptop is getting hotter but the motherboard sensor is not recording it, so the fans don't come on and the laptop just gets hotter and hotter until the CPU starts throttling.

The Dell technician just finished installing a new heatsink and fan on my M1210.

I did not get a look at the new parts, but I can definately feel more air movement compared to the old fan.
The old fan, BTW, was a Toshiba pushing out 5.3 CFM of air.

I did notice that the new heatsink also had a thermal pad for the GPU (my old one did not).

With my old parts, CPU temp at idle was 24°C/32°C and GPU was 52°C. At high load, CPU temps peaked at 78°C and GPU at 112°C

With the neat parts, CPU idle temps are about the same, but GPU idle temp is about 42°C.
Peak CPU load temp (so far with Half-Life 2) is 67°C and GPU is 81°C. Much better!

My parts list indicates:
MJ059 Fan;70x65x12;5V;CPU;M1210
UH112 ASSY;HTSNK;PGA;DISCRT;M1210
UP755 PAD,CLG,PSX,18X18X0.2,CPU.PORT
PG978 Replace by Part UP755

May I ask how you're measuring your temps?

I guess I will open it up again today when I get home to look at the part numbers.

Besides, I'd rather put Arctic Silver on the cores rather than the generic white goop the tech probably used.

I can't yet confirm that this is the new fan the tech installed, but I can tell you that the old one was definately a Toshiba (I read the sticker but didn't see a part number).

I'm still waiting for a technician to come... The parts were not here in Mexico so they had to import them... They said no more than 10 business days... Hope my temps get better...
Although they were way higher...

At just surfing internet and watching youtube... I got temps above 80°C don't know about my GPU...

So they installed it... the heatsink and the fan... I really feel it alittle bit colder but still warm..

I flashed back to the A04 BIOS since my troubles only really began once I updated to Vista and A06. I'm now back on XP so had no need for the newer BIOS.

Unfortunately the locking up and ultra-high CPU usage remains.

I think the bottom line is that I bought my M1210 last September and ambient temperatures have been pretty steady until now, when summer has kicked in.

Guess I'll need to get mine serviced and in the mean time, I'll set up an aggressive i8kfangui profile. I might also have a go at re-seating the heatsink on the CPU.

I set my i8kfangui to set my fan max 24/7 due to the unbearable heat.

Even that, the lowest temp ever reached is only 48 degrees C

If that's the case I think you need to get it serviced.

Hey Guys I just called up Dell about a few issues I am having - Increase Heat from Laptop - Intermittent switching of power source - Intermitten switching of Wifi/Bluetooth - Auto standby on battery mode even when battery is full They will replace my motherboard and the cooling components. Apparently also the latest Nvidia Driver from Dell may crash the system when going in/coming out from standby

The new heatsink is in place. Here are the new temp readings. Max Fan State/Before/After Idle/52/44 Max/90/66 I saw the old sink, apparently the entry of the fins were clog by a lot of dirt. You guys might want to open up and clean up that area.

Can I just add that i have also had all the problems you have mentioned in this thread. My laptop was bought in Sep 06.

Bottom line is, after motherboard and fan were replaced by a Dell engineer the problem still remained!! The fan would not cut into the highest setting and the laptop would become way too hot. CPU would throttle and the whole thing became a crawl. If i manually fan'ed the bottom of the machine with like a cd case or something then it would be useable again.

I tried re-installing Vista and re-installing XP (as if it would make a difference i know) same thing. The Bios was A06 on the new motherboard installed and of course i tried A07 with no effect.

My M1210 is being replaced, YES REPLACED, on Monday.

As I'm away from the UK I can't get my M1210 fixed. Today I was so annoyed with the CONSTANT overheating, I decided to break the whole thing open and see what's going on.

Essentially the grill on the left where the fan expels the air was completely gummed up with fluff and dust. I cleaned the entire heating assembly and temps are down by a massive 30 degrees centigrade.

When I get back to England I'm still going to get it properly serviced though. If there's a better heating assembly for this unit, I want it.

that's the fan on mine. It easily gets clogged with dust about one a week and cleaning that often is a pain. currently idling at 37 cpu, 44 gpu, but when I play CS:S it gets up to 75 cpu and 85 gpu. After gpu temps of 70 and up it begins to throttle, crap out, and purple texture on things. I'm going to contact dell to see if there's an upgraded fan and heatsink, or if maybe mines dying, but it's pretty new so I don't think so. I'd like to at least have them send me another heatsink so that i can try snipping every other fin off of mine to prevent dust catching and building up.
