My Dell 8600 Review - Page 2

It is my understanding that all the new 8600's do not have the trackstick or the legacy ports. I'm sure you want a new laptop, but maybe one of the refurbs would be of the "old" style with the parts you seek. I had my mobo replaced recently and it retained the legacy ports, so Dell is still supporting them.

That's a good idea! I like everything else about it. Now where do I get a refurbished one? I've seen that mine is the I8600c. Does anyone know the differences between a b c? Do they make a 2.0 GHz a or b? I think I saw another dell forum on their own site I can ask in...

You could also look into doing a chassis swap to a D800, which should offer you trackstick functionality (you'll still be SOL on legacy support). Check the mod thread in Dell general for details. Also note that if you don't feel comfortable ripping apart your laptop this option may not be the best one for you.

If your still within your 21 days you can always return it.

I have relatively small hands but it's still possible for me to use my thumb to navigate with the touchpad if I wanted to.

My old laptop was taken apart and put back together many many times. :-) It is a frankenstein of several machines.

Hmm... *Tries it* I have long skinny hands and I don't like doing that. You can't drag things or select things or press both buttons at once like that either. All I want is a touchpad and trackpoint and three buttons on each! Is that so much to ask??? :-)

I'm thinking of sending this back and getting a refurbished old model 8600. Of course then I can't pick and choose components, but as long as the processor and graphics and LCD are what I want, the rest is swappable. A lot of people complain about the trackpoints on those, though. Are they bad in some way?

Then again, you say putting a D800 keyboard on it would give the trackpoint functionality? So I could replace it with an old-style 8600 keyboard and do the same thing, right? Can I take this thing apart and check for the jumpers and still be able to return it?
