AW config: 7400 D2C processor, 100GB 7200RPM, 2GB RAM, ATI x1800, DVD-RW, Vista Premium, 3yr warranty (Price paid: $2880)
Dell config: 7600G, 2GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm HDD, 7950 GTX, Bluetooth, Vista Ultimate, 3yr warranty (price paid $3200 on ebay, cost from dell: $4700)
Overall: Dell made a greater impression on my than AW. When you touch m1710 there is a feel of luxury. You can feel it everywhere from touching the keyboard to other finishes (finish on the back of the LCD looks incredible)
1) Build quality:
a) AW: good
b) Dell: even more solid than AW, battery is located under the hand rest, some flex near screen, solid everywhere else
2) Heat dispension
a) AW: gets unfortably warm at hand rests. Some people got used to it. I could not, it made my palms sweat. The buttom of the computer is not as hot as Dell. I would've prefered the hotter laptop bottom than hand rests.
b) Dell: hand rests are pleasantly colder than AW. The right hand rest gets a little warm, but by far not as warm as AW. Keyboard it self get a litttle warm, nothing major. The underside of the laptop gets hot, but it is ok for since I keep the ocmputer on the table most of the time
3) Screen:
screen are pretty much equal. Both of the screens have an issue with backlight leak coming from the bottom of the screen, it is especially noticable in the dark room on dark backgrounds (i.e. when watching a movies with dark background)
a) AW: has a little of grain, noticable on grey backgrounds
b) Dell: seem brighter than AW's screen, but cant notice that on the pictures., games seem displayed better.
4) Keyboard:
AW: has a full size keyboard. Left CNTRL and FNC buttons should be switched. The right SHIFT and arrows are too small causing me to mistype all the time since I used to use those buttons while typing.
Dell: keyboard does not have as many buttons,i like the full size SHIFT and ENTER buttons on the right side. I think the keyboard should be a little wider. I have a 15.4 laptop which keyboard is wider so I tend to mistype when typing on Dell, but if you use this laptop for typing dell seems to be a better choice. Plus, keyboard button have this special luxury feeling that AW does not.
5) Performace
AW: Vista was a little clumsy, it took some time for the program menus in the START menus to open up while DELL opened all the folder momenterely
Dell: seems much faster as far as Vista operating goes. My computer can be overclocked from Bios. Even as 2.33 Ghz it is faster.
6): looks:
AW: blue alien head in the back, cool
Dell: light coming from the mouse pad, fan slots and from the back XPS letter. The colors can be changed by Dell Quick program even in Vista. You can change lettering to almost any color you can think of, I was impressed, very cool feature
Conclusion: I was impressed by Dell more than I was with AW. You can feel the quality when work with Dell computer. IT is a little heavier than AW, but I think I get much more for the money I am paying with Dell. see pictures below
