No recording software is working HELP! PLEASE!

I have recently purchased an Ispirion 5300/E1505 and attempted to record through the sound card using several different recording software. For some reason, I cannot get anything to record. This is very frustrating because I use this feature extensively. I have an idea that has something to do with Media Direct, although I cannot prove it.

I have used the software many times on my old HP machine, so I know that they work (and work well).

Can anybody tell me why this is happening and how to fix it?

I assume you are trying to record sound originating from your computer. The Dell e1x05s sigmatel sound chips don't have the "What U Hear" option that would probably be seen on your old laptop (the what u hear option puts all sounds through the mic in without the use of a cable). The limitation of this chip will probably prevent you from recording sound coming from your computer unless you run a cable from the headphone out to the mic in port. This may be a inelegant solution, but it does work. This thread may be helpful since it is about the sigmatel drivers and revealing more features.

If the sound is coming from another source, then the sound card is not the problem. The first place to check is in the volume control window. Click on Options, and find Properties. Select "Adjust playback volume for... recording. Now make sure all the options that show up below are checked (selected). After clicking Ok, ensure the volume sliders are atleast halfway up. Also check the source settings and the volume settings in your recording program(s).

If your problem is the latter, there may be another workaround that I am no aware of. It may be worthwhile to wait a few more days for another reply. Good luck.
