GeForce 8800 GTX

I want to build a new gaming machine, but when is nvidia going to move on from the GeForce 8800 GTX? I want to build when the price on the core 2 duo and the 8800 price falls like when some newer technology come out.

and is it worth it putting something like this on your machine or is it a fad?
AGEIA PhysX Accelerator 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Card

In my opinion, the physics card is more hype than necessity. Only a handful of games actually take use of that, and even then for the price I would think it's overrated. Also, I'm wondering about the 89xx series as well and it's release...hopefully it'll be even greater ^_^ my guess is sometime within the next 2-3 months though.

Nvidia has released their powerhouse.. and now they are filling in the rest of their platform to match the market of normal users. There was supposed to be an 8800 Ultra (I believe some polished form of the 8800s) but it hasn't been released. I hear it won't be.

Really, we're waiting for ATI's X2900 to see if Nvidia needs to reset the bar again or not. So far, while there is no competition, it is easier to market to the masses of consumers looking for cheaper DX10 solutions.

I haven't seen a Physics card "real world" benchmark that shows its performance worth the cost of the card. My guess is that most games just don't know how to really use their power yet.

2 - 3 months....i can wait, i think.

I saw something about ati building their new cards in a way that would be able to restrict what you were able to view on your car. cant remember where i saw the article right now though it was on neowin or techspot i think

The 8800 Ultra was announced today and the price is supposed to be around $830.. if anybody is on that much crack to pay that much money for a video car, they seriously need to give me money.. It's pathetic when you can get a quad core CPU for more than $300 less than a GPU..

wow that is a lot maybe if i skipped eating for a couple moths i could justify buying it...nope, no way...

any noticeable drop in the price of the 8800gtx or the core2duo? i heard intel was due for some price cuts by the end of april...

is there any site that tracks prices of components and shows a trend of the cost?

oh, and which is better:
XFX PVT80FSHF9 GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 PCI Express Video Card w/Dual-DVI, HDTV-Out or
Asus EN8800GTX/HTDP/768M GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB PCI-Express Video Card w/Dual-DVI, HDTV-Out

Processors have bottomed out. The E6600 is only ~$230 and will handle practically ANYTHING you can throw at it and overclocks like a champ. If you are waiting for a price drop on processors of $100 you will be waiting a long time IMO.

If that money makes a big difference to you step down from the GTX to a GTS. The 320 MB version is under $300, 640 MB is $370 (one for $359 at newegg now after MIR) while the gtx's are roughly twice that. Get the system and start enjoying it.

oh...ok. nah, what i'm really afraid of is that I will build the system and the week or month after something comes out that seriously depriciates its value or is a big improvement over it . that happened to me with the ipod, i bought an ipod photo 60Gb and within a month they released the video. i jumpy like this when i bought the m1710 but i'm glad i did it now. i had seen an article too that had said that intel was due to make price cuts around the end of april but anyway i was wondering do you get the same kind of performance from the BFG, XFX and ASUS 8800 GTXs?

All the Nvidia cards per model generally perform the same, however factory-overclocking will gain you some more speed. Usually not worth the extra cost though. The extras such as tech support, warranty, freebies, etc may be a good decision maker if you're deciding between equal-price options.

Sadly the 8800 Ultra is hardly a major upgrade... it isn't worth the cost.

We'll see when the X2900s rolls out, whether it can truly beat the 8800s.. rumors are not by much.
