notice the last sentence...

"We plan to introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007."

I was surprised at this. I was always given to believe that LEDs were too big for laptop screens.

Very happy to hear it, however.

It's just a shame they can't ditch the LCD panel and compose each pixel directly out of LEDs.

AMOLED screens would have been freaken sweet.... then again its just my opinion. would probably be too bloody expensive to make a 15" AMOLED

The problem with OLEDs right now are the fact that they don't last long; especially blue.

They've gotten the levels up over the years but they still have a relatively short life. However, once mass production gets underway it would, conceivably, be incredibly easy to offer slip in replacements.

Call me ignorant.....but how are LED screens better?
My glossy LCD seems great to me.

One of the advantages of LED is even backlighting. Do you ever notice on a dark or black background LCDs have patterns where certain areas are brighter than others and it can vary from mildly annoying to extreme. One of the things LED will hopefully solve is that.

LED screens are more even with the light, like ATC7 said, and also they promise a larger colour gamut because the colour of the backlight can be more precisely controlled with LEDs than with CCFLs.

But, LEDs die at different rates which means that, unlike CCFLs which just get dimmer or die outright, the colour of the backlight will start to change over time.

I keep waiting for a 12" MacBook Pro, or whatever version of an ultraportable Apple comes out with. May have to break down and try out the new 15.4" with the LED displays if they come out in the next few months.
