My screen is cracked and has a line on the right side of the screen an the bottom where the line starts it looks like a blotch of ink. I can't feel the crack because it looks like its on the inside screen. i talked to hp and they said they are sending something for me to ship it in. I have only had it since november 06 an they say it is warrantied for a year. will they fix it or replace it? will it be free or will they charge me? do i need to take my info off of it or is it ok and are my files ok?

i also purchased a warranty from brandsmart when i purchased it?

basically how is hps customer service and what will the options be with my laptop?

thanks

Any thoughts on where to get a screen, or information on how-to change it? Or what type of screen I should go for?

Can I get one off ebay if the size is the same as mine 15.4?

thanks

You can get the replacement lcd from ebay. Look here for the manual and download it. Once you open it you can see the lcd model number then go from there. pm if you need help

The HP service manual can downloaded from there website. It is not aprticularily difficult to replace. I just replaced the 17" screen on DV9008nr; took me about 30 minutes max. The original LCD developed a diagonal line on actual LCD panel itself. I sent to HP for repair and HP stated it was "User Accidental" damage. Since I did not opt for the additional accidental damage insurance HP quoted $675.00 to replace it. I had it shipped back to me and replaced the screen myself with a replacement from www.lcdsrcreen.com. They did not have the OEM brand panel in stock (AU Optronics) but sold me a compatible replacement which fit exactly. I found the screen performance acceptable. It has a very slight annoyance when you are booting up. While you are waiting for the OS to load the screen is blank and should be pure black. The replacement display shows a muddy dark grey. However, the once the OS (Windows MCE) reaches the log-on screen all colors appear to be correct. I paid $230 + shipping for the LCD which is a fart better price than HP quoted me so I will live with the slight annoyance.

Good luck!

lcd screens have come down in price a ton. shoot me a private message if you want to get it repaired or if you want to sell the unit with a cracked lcd.

i have the same problem. we did not drop it or physically damage it . how did your screen get cracked? are you sure it is not HP quality issues.

are they trying to scam their customers for their own defects. I am thinking to complain to consumer protection agencies?

I made an account here just to say that my HP dv6 screen just cracked too. I've had since SEPTEMBER, so a little more than a month, and I didn't even drop it or anything. I just opened up my laptop, and it was cracked. It felt smooth to the touch but there was rainbow streaks across the screen. I just shipped it off the HP, but judging by your comments I'll be charged a ridiculous amount.
This is absolutely ridiculous since it was obviously poorly made.

Good luck in pounding them. Hope HP sorted out for you, at no cost. Did you happen to take some pics of the outside? Just to cover your track that there is no mark caused by drop, bump etc ...

cheers ...

I didn't think of taking pictures! I sent it off to the Repair Center a few days ago. They actually left me a voicemail today saying, "The cracked screen isn't covered by the one year warranty, so we're charging you 450 dollars." Absolutely ridiculous considering the screen cracked because it was manufactured poorly.

HP is not the only one having this ridiculous ding unless customers buy some sort of extended warranty. You can replace the screen yourself, getting a good used/2nd hand - a 20 minutes job - for 1/3 (or less) of what HP wants.

cheers ...

Luckily (sort of), HP just called me and said that they'll take 50% off making it a 200 dollar repair. I don't know if I should accept, because I don't think an LCD replacement could get much cheaper than that. Could it?

It could be cheaper but it is not worth the hassle, one never knows what else can go wrong when you take the screen apart, especially your first time.

Take the offer and make sure that they extend the warranty for you.

cheers ...
