updating my RAM question!

Thread Starter
My Computer:

Inspiron 6000
128mb graphics card
1.8 pentium M at 533mhz
1 gig of RAm 2 dimension

If i upgrade my RAM, my questions are

1. i dont want to buy through dell, how do i know my new RAM will work with my computer. Do i look for the 200 pins? or what do i look for?

2. Since my processor runs at 1.8 at 533mhz. what if i get a RAM that runs at 667mhz, will that work or ruin my computer?

3. Does it matter if one of my RAM sticks is a 1 gig at 667mhz and my other one is 512 at 400mhz. because i dont want to buy 2 rams just to increase my speed to 2 gig. I would be happy with 1 gig and a 512 if that will work??

I am looking to update my lap top RAM. here is a link i saw on ebay

*snip* NO EBAY LINKS PLEASE!!

or should i buy from newegg or somewherer else?

1. You are after DDR2 200-pin SODIMMs.
2. It won't ruin your computer, but there is really no point. Your chipset only supports 533MHz so the RAM will simply clock down to that speed.
3. You can do that, but you suffer two penalties. (1) Mismatched pairs will not run in dual channel, and; (2) The faster RAM will downclock and run at the same speed as the slower RAM.

I suggest that you get the 2GB kit from Crucial I have linked following. It is only US$88, it is the max speed supported by your computer, Crucial is one of the best brands and is guaranteed to work. http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...=Inspiron+6000

falconbal2,

Your best bet would to be to purchase the 2 GB kit of 533MHz memory. Otherwise if you just get 1 GB of 533MHz memory and add it to your laptop with 1 - 512 MB 400mMHz memory you will have 1536 MB of memory all running at 400mhz (the 1 GB of RAM will automatically be stepped down).

Sell your 2 -512MB memory DIMMS on e-bay.
