Spaxs 5680 Stress Cracks - Page 6

well, if you are to replace the lid on your own rather rma back for repair, Sager will just have you email/write them a statement it is your responsibility if anything breaks causes of it. other then that it won't void the warranty

heres what the admin at www.powernotebooks.com said about fatigue cracks on the 56XX series...

this is the entire quote and nothing was changed...

"Unless the laptop has been abused, cracking is covered by your warranty.

More importantly, very few ever get any stress cracks. You only read about the few that do.

Lastly, if you hold the bottom of your laptop down with one hand while you lift the lid with the other, you will almost never get any cracking. But if you simply lift the lid with one hand you are putting undue stress on the lid, and sometimes, but rarely, it will crack. So, get int he habit of opening it correctly and you will probably never see a stress crack. I have never had any on mine.
"

I hope the tips he suggested holds true.

With $2000 I shouldn't have to worry about how I open the lid of my laptop

Um... I'm getting brain freeze. Can anyone elaborate on the advice of how to open your laptop lid....
if you look at the service manual (see G-Omaha post), it gives you the steps to remove it. But the number of things you have to remove to get the lcd housing out is insane. In the meantime I'll just carefully open and close the lid each time

Can you guys believe that my screen case is cracked again? Less than a month after I RMA'ed it to Sager? What are they going to think if I RMA it again? I have not been rough on this machine at all.

It's a Sager 5670 with sxga+, 15 inch screen, p4 2.4 ghz, ATI M9 w/ 128 mb, 256 mb ram, etc...

I know they obvisouly dont know how/cant fix the problem, its proably a design flaw so no matter how many times they may fix the symptoms the root of the problem still exists. I juat told them to fix my cracks cause i had to send it in anyhow.

but you also have to consider, that $2000 isn't just for a casing, but for all the stuff inside, like the processor, ram, battery, harddrive, CD-RW drives Etc....

if you were to buy an Alienware, with the same specs as your sager, i asume it would cost way over $2000, and maybe into the $3000.

What I meant when I asked how to open the lid was referring to the advice gievn by the guy at powernotebooks. Since I don't know how to quote, he said that you should hold the bottom of the laptop while opening the lid to avoid cracks...what does he mean by bottom? I'm thinking its the part with the audiodj, and you hold that down while you pull the lid open.... but I dont see how that would help, so I'm thinking i misinterpreted?
ah yea, I think it means hold the back side of the LCD down, the part where the LCD lights are, while you pull the panel up. However i've been doing this for days, and the crack on the right side is getting bigger.
Hm... Don't see how that would help either... you'll be pulling up at the front, and pushing down at the back...wouldn't that help to snap the lid in half?

Well I'm gonna be sending my 5690 back soon. The cracks have become a lot bigger, and now I have 2 new BIG cracks on the back side of the LCD. I open the LCD very very carefully, yet they still crack. I think it's mainly because my hinges are super-tight, I actually have to make quite an effort to open the damn thing. Both corners of my LCD panel look like they're gonna break off.
i asked my retailer to tell sager to "make it not so tight". hmm....

right now its on transit from sager to my retailer, then its going to be shipped from my retailer to me.
I'm pretty sure that during assembly, a tech puts together the hinge pieces and ultimately sets the stiffness. This would explain why some 5690's dont have cracks at all, some have them only after 1 year, and why some like mine get huges ones after one month. It shouldn't be a problem making it looser, good grief. I won't be a happy camper if I get mine back with the same stiffness
post #118 of 170
now, what i'm worried about is, if its too loose its ganna be unstable, and sway back and forth.
well today was the last day before I send it back to Sager tomorrow. I come home and open the lid and I hear *snap* A nice little piece popped out. Here are some pics. Just wonderful eh?
