Change video Card ATI x1400 to Nvidia GFORCE 7300

Thread Starter
It is posible to change this two video cards in my DELL Inspiron 6400, make an update from ATI x1400 -> Nvidia Gforce 7300
post #2 of 12
ATI is better than Nvidia in this particular setup. I wouldn't advise.

I doubt its possible without swapping a whole motherboard anyway... even if it was its not worth it, ATI card is better.

As mentioned above, the ATI x1400 is the better card anyway, just forget about swapping them over.

This is pure curiosity but is Dell planning on having an upgradeable GPU for the 1505/6400?

Just a guess, but I have a feeling that the 1505/6400 series is near the end of its life.

Highly doubt a better card will ever come out for the 6400. It's near the end of life, and in two months, the successor will come out.

Yep, x1400 will be EOL. Unless successor uses same chassis and video form factor (unlikely), then the e1505/ i6400 will not see a video upgrade.

Most likely End of Life and it wont be long before you see a Santa Rosa Variant with a x2300 or 8400 in it.

Arent both those cards inferior to the x1400? Going by the list at http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-...ist.844.0.html they are, so why is it considered an upgrade? Better processor and worse graphics?

The e1505 is just a motherboard inside a case that supports two sticks of DDR2, and core duo or core 2 duo depending on the bios. If you bought a Inspiron with a graphics card the gpu really is a daughter card that connects to the motherboard where the card is parallel to the motherboard and the heat pipe goes off to the left in the same area where the single fan blows all the hot air out. The CPU is not soldered on so it can be swapped out for a better one. I see no reason to kill the inspiron e1505 line until a socket change of the processor because Dell can just introduce new gpus. I myself had purchased a 1505 back before they offered any graphics options besides intel. The only difference in the motherboard is that the port where the graphics card plugs into is not on the board. But a trip to ebay and I snaged a Core 2 Duo, motherboard that suppports the video cards available and a 7300 Go for less then four hundred dollars total. Granted it was a huge pain to strip down the entire machine to get to the motherboard, but it is doable. Especially since the cooling for the video is built into the card and fits a standard size and voltage limit. If you already have a x1300 or 7300 go you can just flat out replace the graphics card. However you will still have to take off the hinge cover, monitor, keyboard, and the palm rest to get anywhere near the video car to swap it out. Edit: The dughter card has room to grow as far as size is concerned. It is raised up above the systemboard and could probably be at least another half an inch wider maybe even a full inch. The gpu is located right around the t key and the i key with the heat pipe going all the way to the vent on the left back side. The only other thing in the way is the wireless mini card between [ and \\ keys. The real problem is heat and if there is any extra voltage to power a more intensive gpu. The system only has one fan to cool it all. I personally hope they can squeeze at least one more generation out of this machine as far as graphics are concerned for the selfish reason of not having to buy a whole new laptop to upgrade. Honestly though sakor1 is probably right about this being the eol. Dell can not sell more better laptops if they do not cut off the old ones from being able to be any better. So why design the new parts to meet with the old specs of the e1505. We all knew the e1505 was never a heavy gaming machine anyways. Oh and hi my screen name is enderbeta and I am addicted to computers.

The only way around this is to go to www.IDEASTORM.com
It's a dell site encouraging new ideas that are PROPOSED and VOTED ON by CUSTOMERS.
Get more than 1000 votes, then they are likely to do the proposed action.
The e1505 or 6400 video card issue has already been addressed in this case, so register on ideastorm. (1 step, no verification emails).
Find the thread for E1505 video cards and vote.
Next, register 1 billion different names and keep voting.
Eventually if people actually do it then they HAVE to listen.
Ideastorm was put there for THIS EXACT reason, and my e1505 is a dual core t7200 that can't handle Oblivion on med/high settings w/ Nvidia's Go("F" urself) 7300.
