College Student looking for a laptop

yes it's another one of these threads. i'm new to this forum and I am active in others and i know people hate these kinds of posts, but there are just so many laptops out there.

i've done some research for a laptop for college next year. i'm looking to spend anything around $800-$1250 (a bit below/above is not a problem). I do not game much, only when i'm painfully bored, i will play counter-strike (yes lame, but i don't feel like buying games at the moment). I do webdesign/programming a lot since that's my part-time business. Here are my needs:
- Intel Core 2 Duo
- Some kind of graphics card
- Portability (14" or less, 5.5lbs or less)
- Some out-video (s-video, etc)
- Run applications such as Photoshop CS2, iTunes, Dreamweaver
- Windows (I dislike OSX since I run some window-only programs)

I need this to last at least 4-5 years... I here Lenovo/IBM has awesome build quality. Dell isn't all that great.

Help a noob out, i know all the vets dislike us...

I've been very happy with Dell, just to get to you before you totally shut them out of the running. Very few problems, and what problems I have had have been fixed promptly.

I would go with dell because of the discounts. But Asus is very nice

With dell, call them. Tell them what you want, and before they can give you a price (you know what it will be, build it before you call so you know) Say it is around $1500, tell them that you cant go any higher than $1200. Tell them that you can buy that day etc, and I bet they will drop $200 at least off of it.

If they drop so much tell them that you might think about financing it through dell if they will drop some more off (I think it is 6 months interest free, but when I did it I had all the money right then so I paid it off the first bill they sent).

Just something to keep in mind (plus the college student discounts)

I have the Dell XPS M1210, and I love it. I got it over Spring Break, so I didn't have it my whole Freshman year, but the time I did have with it was great. Great graphics that have played anything I have wanted to so far, VERY light and portable, which is nice if you are planning to take it to class for notes like I did. Overall, this has been the best lappy I have used, which is a lot between me, my dad, and friends.

i've been looking into the IBM thinkpad lines.

There's a sale on the x60 for
ThinkPad X60 Series (Part No 1709CTO)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5500 (1.66GHz, 2MB L2, 667MHz FSB) 12.1" XGA TFT
Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
Keyboard US English
Integrated fingerprint reader
TrackPoint with Fingerprint Reader
60GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm Serial ATA (2.5")
Integrated 1Gb Ethernet
ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe US/EMEA/LA/ANZ
ThinkPad X60 Series 4 cell Enhanced Capacity Battery
Unit Price : $ 1135
Estimated total: $ 964.75

might be a little cheaper if i can stack deals. This is not my set up, but it looks pretty cheap.

or how about the 14.1" t60 or the new t61?

only thing i can see wrong with the thinkpads (x60 and t61) are no video card upgrades. It isn't much of a deal to me since i don't game much. Occassional counter-strike b/c i'm bored.

thinkpads are great notebooks, I would get the t60 or t61, but that is just me

that was my original plan. i think it'll be between the t60/t61 or the dell xps1210 (maybe even the 6400).

shall i go with the new santa rose or it's no big deal?
