Two part Blue-Ray drive question - Page 2

Whatever floats your boat, then. However you justify it to yourself won't affect how others perceive your use of it but I'm pretty much beyond caring at this point. Godspeed.

Let's sum this thread up here:

The 360 drive will work with the m170 with just a little Googling for drivers if you use XP.

The lack of HDCP support means by default, HDDVD disks will not play back at full resolution.

Using AnyDVD and a bit more tweaking will allow you to get around the above problem.

SolApathy would like to remind everyone that technically, the above is not "supported" by the benevolent quasi-monopoly Microsoft, or Dell for that matter. Also, he/she would like to point out that the sky is blue and the sun will rise tomorrow, statistically speaking.

That about it?

As the originator of this thread, I never expected it to go the way it did. WOW!!! However, since it is apparently obvious that the 360 drive can and will work with the M170 using various programs to get the picture on the screen, will the same programs allow the blue-ray drive to display movies as well? OR..... is the 360 drive the only way to get high definition movies onto the M170???

kilroy - I'm unable to test if it works with a non HDCP video card but I am able to play both BD and HD-DVD disks on a non HDCP monitor. I was not able to do this prior to installing the HD version of AnyDVD. Check out the forums on www.slysoft.com and you might be able to get more definitive answers. SolApathy - When you say you are 'sure' about things that are not correct, you leave yourself open for attack. Your posts tend to come across with a 'know it all' type of attitude. You might want to try adding 'in my opinion' or IMO. Understanding that everyone else is entitled to their own opinions might help too. Yes, we all know opinions are like A$$ Holes, everyone has one and they all stink. Just a friendly observation...

You really, truly need to get over yourself. Personal attack? I don't know you, you're just some bits bouncing around the net just like I am to you. I point out that your use of $ in Microsoft makes people take you less seriously and you've gone on for like 4 posts now explaining it. Speaking for this small collection of digital bits - I don't care

If you get a BD drive, of course, then AnyDVD will also allow those movies to play in HD as well.

My "sure" reference in the M$ post was regarding whether they knew that the hardware would be used to subvert HDCP protections. While I believe there could always be the possibility they wanted to provide a drive that could be used on any PC to subvert HDCP, it is unlikely. They knew there would be some people that decided to try the drive on a PC, that was not it's intended purpose, though.

I'ts just like a company that sells a car. They sell it for an intended purpose, but they know there are going to be a few people out there that decide to use it for something else (like robbing a bank).

I do not believe I have a know it all attitude. I call things as I see them & I'm not shy about it. When somone decides on changing it from a topic discussion to a personal attack (The Liinux comment-was that really needed? )that just shows they are incapable of making an argument based on merits & causes them to lose credibility even if they later make a valid point.

#1. After his last comment I figured I would take the time to respond to it & clarify what I was saying.

#2. ...the adapter link you posted has nothing to do with the Drive we are talking about. I never said M$ had the intention of preventing ANY connectivity. I was talking about using the drive for bypassing HDCP protections (which also opens the door for copying HD-DVD's)...

#3. No I do not work for M$, however I do understand business & M$ did not make the drive for the PC. yes it works on th PC...There is a lot of hardware out there that was was designed for a specific use, but has been adapted by savvy users to suit other purposes as I stated in my previous post.

#4. You want me to find a post by M$ stating they did not intend the drive to be adapted for PC usage? I think the lack of full driver support speaks for itself. While you can play HD-DVD movies on XP/Vista systems with a little work, you cannot look at the drive data on these discs. I doubt MS is going to offer a press release stating "omg we never expected it"... they would open themselves to immense criticism, especially considering their engineers probably already knew it was a possibility, as I stated in a previous post.

Well, looks like the cool thing to do is grab an internal blue-ray drive, then get the xbox360 external HD HDVD drive, then the proper programs, and I have a virtual movie studio in my laptop!!! Now, just gotta find a good deal on the BD drive. Anyone wanna trade for a dvd burner??

Oh no! The dog bites? Please don't bite, that would be.....terrible.

What you are really doing, and are far too dense to pick up on apparently, is being a pompous a$$. See what I did there? I kill myself.

Honestly I'd just skip the internal BD drive - not worth the money, and this ridiculous HD format "war" is long from played out yet. The 360 drive is a good deal only because it's so cheap. Yes, with the BD drives you can burn too, but those disks are ridiculously expensive, and thanks to the war there's little chance they will drop in price any time soon.

Honestly I don't see the point of either on a laptop....movies look better, sure, but the smaller screens hardly do them justice. HD movies are really meant for much bigger screens/viewing areas, in my humble opinion.

well I must say you are definitely capable of slinging insults as well as advice.

oh no... I'm just playing with you while you make your invalid arguments and being defensive or was that valid arguments and defending... hmmmmmm... IMO, you have no sense of humor and you're overly defensive. Go ahead and 'Bite Me'
That's right I was born without a sense of humor. I'm just sitting here stating the obvious. Everytime I make a comment you two retort with an insult, I'm impressed.
