That's odd, are you using the same type of notebook Ram your MX8734 ships with, if not that could be the problem, it has to be the same Ram Specs, are it WILL NOT WORK, you need to find out what your original RAM type is (Samsung, Infineon, Qimonda, Nan Ya,Hynix) whatever Gateway shipped with your MX8734 (Hynix is what your specs say it is) This happen to me back in JAN 07, the problem was the wrong type of RAM chip, what I found out was I needed Hynix chips, and that WORKED after I found the correct ones....are you sure your using THIS TYPE RAM: Memory 2523342R-533 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Assembly - Hynix (CRU/EURP) I cannot find anywhere in your MX8734 specs, that you can use 667Mhz DDR2, but that shouldn't be a problem, it will just throtell-down-to 533Hmz DDR2 Speed I see no reason why, you cannot use 3 or 4GB of the correct RAM, unless your mobo doesn't support that much? Here's a list of what type RAM you can use in your MX8734: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...4366Rcl4.shtml

Gentoon,

Did the driver I referenced you to in the PM work? That should have done the trick. Pls let me know. Syrtus, the Intel 943/945 chipset can only address 2 GB ram, even though there was an errata in the specs that were issued that said 4GB, they rolled it back about 4 months ago to 2GB. Possibly you can skirt it with an exact matched pair of some specific chips, but I doun=bt it. Intel chipsets are not normally choosey about flavor, but it is the addressing that does it in. The newer steppings will address 4 GB but I will bet you have the older stepping. That is why it is doing what it is doing, I believe. Pls post your chipset as listed in the hardware section of Vista to make sure, or go to Intel.com and look it up. This was not widely publicised but then neither was the huge pain it is to reload with XP, nor gateways refusal to assist customers if they wanted to go to a real OS instead of the flowery bulk of Vista.

Ecork11, you are absolutely correct, they put out bad info on the GB the chipset will deal with. It should be 2GB except for the most recent stepping ( last 2 monts or so).

the memory type is ok, just MB does not support 4gig.

from my perusal of Gateway support site, the MB that supports 4gig is a different part # & not cost effective to swap MB. I purchased this Mx8738 for $499 so am satisfied with the performance.

MB 4006172R supports 2gig 943gml chipset
MB 4006145R supports 4gig 945PM chipset

will wait for the T7600 to fall in cost & swap that cpu in later.

sisoft Sandra reported 3gig max for the MB, 3gig also did not boot (1x1gig 667 ddr2 + 1x2gig 667 ddr2). so I changed to 2gig (2x1gig 667 ddr2). runs exactly same as with 1 stick of 2gig

put the 4gig in a ml3109 with ATI radeon express 200m chipset with a t2450 installed & it sees 3gig physical memory with 2.2gig vista usable. did not expect the 32bit core duo to see over 2 gig.

Now that little laptop snaps frames & flys. not bad for a $359 cheapie from Bestbuy.

some things, you don't know until you try

so the memory did not go to waste

32bit Vista won't see the full 4GB, but should see the 3.5GB, now, the 64Bit Vista will see the full 4GB.....Yeah that's Probably what I'll get with my MX6453, but I haven't tried putting in 3GB of DDR2 Ram, (1MB stick and a 2GB stick) but it's nice to know, that it's doable tho, as it would seem CPU speed is irrelevant no-a-days, but w/ 32bit Vista ,3GB of Ram isn't a bad thing either, especially, when you factor in the (shared Video Memory).......so that leaves something to look forward to doing (the 3GB DDR2 Memory upgrade) in my MX6453

So I'm going to open this thread back up because this is the only place I've found where people seem to have answers to the MX8734 problem. I have found the video and nic card drivers for XP, but for the life of me I cannot find a proper wireless driver. When you download the 8187 off Realtek, it won't let you use anything but WEP and is obviously completely out of date. I haven't even bothered with the audio yet because the wireless is giving me so much trouble. Anyone out there know the answer to this riddle? Also, I found a lot of answers out there saying to download the intel chipset software installation utility and that solves problems as well. But of course when I go to run the .exe file, it tells me the application is not configured properly. I've tried downloading every version available, all of them do the same thing. Someone please save me from my nightmare.

All the drivers are available from Gateway if you dig around for a compatable laptop that has the same chipset (there are several). Otherwise, go to Gateway and go the the MX8734 page, select components, select motherboard and specifications. The sheet will detail all the parts on the board, and you will get 99% from intel.com. The ethernet controller is a little hard, as it is listed under Networking at the Intel site, but you can then dig down and find it, the link for it is:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ition&lang=eng

Try the above. As far as the wireless goes, this particular wireless setup seemed very crappy from the beginning. I tested it once and only once, as my father (whom I did this grand adventure for) uses DSL with an ethernet hookup only, and refuses to think anything wireless. I did pull an equally great stunt with another Gateway, but I specifically got one with a T7200 C2C and windows Media Center, so I never had to go through this mess with jury rigging what I should have gotten from them (Gateway). However, I do love the machine, and I have dragged it all over the country with no issues and it was 849.00 with a 17" screen 9 months ago when a C2D was running 1500.

The Intel chipset InF should work, even now, but you need to make sure you have the right InF for the right chipset. They had 943 and 945 chipsets mixed in, so that may be the problem, but I did get it working with it. I do think it has a poor directional antenna, or else the driver itself was not efficient. If you cannot get it from the Intel web site, post back and I will see if we can link it somewhere's.
