AW offering Free 1GB PC5300 (2x 512) SODIMM when you buy 2GB!

I purchased a M5550, phase 8 as we speak. I ordered it with only 1GB of memory, thinking I’ll upgrade later. Also, AW charges $270 for the 2GB upgrade, sounded a little steep at first, but I figured it out.

Well, it turns out that AW offers the best PC5300 SODIMM’s. That’s memory for any current C2D machine (667Mhz). It’s CL 4, every other vendor I have checked (and I checked a lot) does not offer this, they are all cheaper, but a CL 5.

CL or CAS Latency is basically how much time it takes your memory to “do what it’s gotta do” the lower the CL#, the better the RAM. That’s about as low as I can dumb it down

Anyway, if you are ordering a C2D notebook you may want to conceder the following.

Order it with the 1GB (2x512), then call TS and order 2GB (2x1024) of memory as a separate order.

Why?

To call TS and order 2GB of this memory, it costs $245.00, to order the upgrade when building your system, it cost $270.00, so right there you save $25.00.
But did you forget your machine will come with 1GB already? So you are getting 1GB of really good PC5300 (again cl4, can’t buy that anywhere else commercially) for free, let alone the $25 off the “build” price.

Now, you cannot install all this memory on your new notebook, it only has two DIMM slots, and you will be putting the 2GB in there, but you can sell the extra 1GB, or keep it as a backup, or install it on another machinef. I have not had a chance to check ebay yet, but I can be the only crazy person looking for PC5300 with < CL5! If you advertise it that way, you’ll get some money for it!

Another note, this method will require you to install the memory yourself, this involves unscrewing a door, and placing the memory modules in a slot. Its that easy, and also supported by AW, just give them a call and they’ll walk you though it if needed.

If anyone from AW on the business end (not tech support…) mod’s these post, I’m sorry. But I personally think that forums like this are where regular real life people can help each other out.

Yep, you can definitely save a few bucks by ordering your RAM from somewhere else. I dunno how easy it is to sell the stock stuff (I must have several 256 and 512 modules sitting around ). Once you've added memory to your notebook, you'll find out it's pretty simple.

The only downsides to ordering all your RAM from AW (besides $$) is that 1) your system will not have been tested with everything you plan to use in it, and 2) you'll want to thoroughly test the 3rd party memory to make sure it's okay. I don't think this is a big deal, but in my lazy old age ... I just order what I need from Alienware.

Note - I don't think there is any problem posting this info - we always recommend external RAM purchasing for people who want to save a few bucks.

Im not sure where the FREE part comes in...

Yeah...you could buy (4) 1gb sticks for the price tag of $250, with $50 to spare. I think it's smarter to but from outside. Even though it may be CL5, the speed is probably not exactly something to cry over.

its not, but if your a PC performance enthusiast, you know what it means
plus, you cant even buy the better memory anywhere else, should put your benchmarks above everyone else.

Ok, I have a tendency to not be clear at times, here is the deal

1.\torder a notebook with 1GB of memory, your PC will ship with this 1GB of memory
a.\tThis is $270 cheaper then buying the 2GB upgrade
2.\tCall AW up and make a regular order for 2GB of memory, not in addition to your existing system, just a regular order for 2GB of memory, this will cost you $245.00 ($25 cheaper then if you ordered the system with 2GB)
3.\twhen you get your new PC, rip out the 1GB, and install the 2GB.
4.\tuse the 1GB you ripped out for something else (your free 1GB)

So, for $245.00 you got and extra 2GB of memory, vice paying $270.00 for a total of 2GB.

so you got 1GB of "left over memory" for -$25.00

Am I still not clear? I have problems with this sometimes …

That assumes that the cost of the 1gb was not factored into the original price.

You come out ahead in your deal, but you aren't getting it for free (you have the 2gb for $25 dollars cheaper with an extra 1gb). The 1gb had a cost to you when you bought the system however.

close, but not really. ill try one last time.

when ordering a system for this you have 2 choices

pay $270.00 and get 2GB of memory (no GB free)
Pay $245.00 and get 3GB of memroy (1GB free)

I'd totaly agree with if IF AW reduced the price of the 2GB upgrade, by removing the price of the original 1GBof memory, but they do not,

it cost $270.00 for the 2GB upgrade and you dont get the original 1GB, they keep that

but, i see your point, if you did not intended to get 2GB in the first place
