New Hypersonic? similar to m860? - Page 7

I tried to find the answer to this earlier, but didn't. Please don't flame me if this is posted elsewhere in this thread and I missed it.

What is the difference between the AMD 64 Mobile and DTR? What exactly is DTR? I, too, am anxiously awaiting the appearance of HS's new AMD notebook. However, I've read twice now that the chip is DTR, and this is usually attached to a negative connotation.

Please explain. And much thanks.

Okay i will bit. Whats DTR?
Hi Tiwaz,

You can find it at amd's website. DTR stands for desktop replacement and is more powerful than the AMD 64 mobile. The Athlon 64 mobile is on the other hand more like centrino. It is capable of handling wireless business.
The M860 is available with a AMD-64 3400+ CPU. Since only the DTRs are currently available at that speed, the M860 must be using DTRs, not AMD-64 Mobiles. VooDoo has been called out on this before, but they still haven't bothered to update their website.

I am not sure whether the Athlon 64 DTR is more powerful than the Athlon 64 Mobile at the same frequency with the same sized cache. I will try to look for a comparison. But we do know that the Athlon 64 Mobile has a lower Thermal Design Power (62Watts vs. 81.5 watts of the DTR). Also the Athlon 64 Mobile can apparently support higher speed RAM, although this is limited by the BIOS. I am talking about the original Athlon 64 Mobiles, not the newer, lower frequency and lower TDP ones. The Athlon 64 Mobile is a processor, it has nothing to do with wireless, nor is it similar to Centrino, which is not a processor but a branding scheme for a bundle.

Jaydeep,

Not quite. The AMD-64 DTR and the AMD-64 Mobile are nearly identical. There are only 2 significant differences:

- The DTR uses ~84w of power, whereas the Mobiles use ~60w (and a few ultra-low voltage models go even lower - ~35w).
- The DTR can't use DDR memory faster than 2700, whereas the Mobiles can go up to 3200.

Other than that, the chips are interchangable. DTRs appear more commonly than true Mobiles, but the Mobiles are starting to become popular. At this point, true Mobiles don't appear in any speed above 3200+, so if you see an AMD-64 advertised as a Mobile, but it has a 3400+ rating, be cautious - at best, the vendor is simply ignorant; at worst, he's outright deceptive.

Oops.. Delta beat me to the punch...
Hi Delta,

Yeah, I was a bit sloppy and I know that centrino is not a processor. What I meant is the similarity with centrino. Below I cut-n-paste the info I gathered from AMD's website. Sorry, this is somewhat long.

Spookymonster : Thanks for correcting me. I heard that Athlon 64 DTR performs well with pc2700 RAM. But soon we are going to have 939(or 940?) chipset which will support faster pc3200 RAM for DTR. This is one of the reasons for delay in releasing various AMD64 laptops from sager(NP4750), prostar(PS4764), hypersonic(AX7) etc.

I just wish someone would hurry up and release one of them so I can buy it
I take it all of these new models are likely to have the DTR chip then? Does anyone have an idea how long windows 64 is likely to take before release? I already have a copy of XP home and if 64 is going to be out soon, I will just use the home edition in the meantime rather than buy XP pro.
Cheers
Jaydeep, I see what you mean. Just keep in mind that when manufacturers group wireless capabilities together with a processor, it is just a marketing strategy. Having one processor will not significantly boost one's wireless performance over another processor of similar speeds. Nor do certain processors contain special wireless capabilities.

If you are talking about Longhorn then, you are going to be waiting awhile. They say its coming out 2005-2006.
He means windows XP 64bit, not Longhorn
Yeah sorry, XP 64 bit. I see this has been released for itanium platforms and I thought AMDs would be out by the end of the year. Not sure if there are going to be any big advantages from using a 64 bit OS until there are some more 64 bit apps to run though.
Cheers

Back to the original topic

Is this damned thing *ever* going to be released?
Here are a few questions I finally got answered this past Sunday (yes, Sunday) from
Michael Kohen. I figured some of you may find this interesting:

Are you accepting pre-orders yet for this system?
1. We expect to offer the AX7 on our site as early as a few days from now.

Will it be available in the green/purple chameleon paint job?
2. You will be able to order the color shift paint as a special order.

If I purchase my own copy of WinXP Pro and provide you with the key, will
you pre-install it on the system? If so, would I then be eligible for a
disaster recovery CD?

3. Yes, we will offer a Disaster Recovery DVD.

What brand of memory do you use in these systems?
4. We use Samsung, Micron and other major brands of ram. Due to the
volatile nature of the memory market, we may are not able to guarantee any
particular brand.

NEWS AT LAST!!!!!!!! Allelujaaa!!!!!!!!
Now let's hope they get it right this time...
And let's hope they have more than one new system... maybe a new 15.4 system as well... (is it asking too much? )
I would die and go to heaven if they offered a 15.4...

I know I reek of geekiness!
Spookymonster, you ARE the man!

Thanks for the constant updates. Now let's get this sucker configured!
Some Corsair RAM would have been perfect, but oh well.

If anyone gets news on how the vid card cpu and memory will be clocked, I'm very interested.

Thanks for the info Spooky.
This may be irrelevant, but the Eurocom Python D470K came down in price. Unless they changed something on the configuration, but it seems the same as before.
Ok, first post, finally found some people to chat with about good laptops. I called Hypersonic today (june 7, at like 1.30 est) and they said "within a few weeks" for the AX7 so.... Earlier times I had called they had said about a week or so... They've had ads out for it in PCGamer and the like so it HAS to be coming soon, theyre not dumb to advertise falsely... I do have a few questions to you guys also... Is there much of a dif between the 9600 and 9700? I see that the AX7 has a 17" screen, too big for me, want it to stay more mobile so I'm leaning toward the AX6... Whad'ya think? It is to replace my gaming desktop and I realize it wont be screaming insano fast as far as desktops go but I should be able to play Far Cray on medium or high right? I was talking with a voodoo rep and he said the difference is almost unnoticeable and that their mobos dont even recognized the dif between 9600 and 9700, it says in bios 9600/9700.... He said he could play Far Cry on high with the m:860 (9700 gpu), so will the Hypersonic AX6 be able to play medium-high with the 9600? Hypersonic, for my budget and needs (great service and preformance, lower cost than voodoo) seems like my only option but if you guys have ideas, let me know. Thanks,

Chris

UPDATE:

Called today at like 1 est and asked them a few more questions about other stuff and this guy said that it will be released in a few days, if not tomorrow. TOMORROW MAYBE! Whoa... Unfourtunately he said they will not be offering a less than 17" version, but he said wait until fall (aww man...) and they should by then....
