svchost.exe maxing out computer...need help

I have been encountering an error with a program called "svchost.exe" that runs on startup. It runs in the background, but it just completely eats up my CPU. It will max out my CPU at 99% for 5-10 minutes each time I start up, crippling my from doing other work. I have to wait until the process is finished before I can do any internet browsing, word processing, or like work. The program seems to be important for OS running as one Process Library describes it like this: "svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated." So I don’t want to perminantly disable this program. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem and how to fix it?

SVCHOST is needed for the succesfull startup of many programs. If you go into the task manager you will see multiple intances of it running. Most likely one of your startup programs is the cause hogging cpu. Try disabling programs on your startup menu to try and pinpoint exactly what program is the problem.

do a search on the entire site for svchost.exe . this issue has been seen quite a few times & there are quite a few possible explainations.

deisable all processes in msconfig under startup. go into the services tab, click "hide all MS services" and do the same. apply & reboot... are you having the same issue? If not go through eah one until you find thet culprit...

If you are still having issues...
are you running AV/Firewal programs to protect yourself.

Run services.MSC and post what services are active.
either way you would need to download program called hijackthis, run it & post you results in the forum.

Just out of curiosity, your sig shows a desktop, so why are you posting in a notebook forum lol?

well, if you keep having the problem, I would reinstall the system. It might just as well be a trojan. Run a bunch of virus scanners and maybe a tool to clean the registry.

oh and you dont actually have to reboot the system. Instead you can go into Control Panel -> Admin tools -> Services. There you can start stop services as you wish (might be quicker than rebooting the system each time).

My first post on the site, Yea I second this this solution I'm leaning towards that Windows Auto Update might be one of the DLLs running under this Process because I notice this problem once a bunch of new updates come up at Windows/ MS Update or even after wiping a HDD and reinstalling XP, try to see if its that, if it is then go to MS/Windows Update site and just DL all the Crit Updates because I highly discourage disabling it, even thought I H8 MS Corp I rather have as many holes patched up than be with a dead computer. This may or may not working your case but try and see. One more thing, I've seen this on both my Laptops and Desktops and btw don't kill the process because when I do it it stop RPC service on my laptop which makes it a pain for it to make a wireless connection when switching APs or switching Accts and connecting to the same AP. If you kill it easiest solution to this just reboot.

That problem is usually related to MSBA (automatic update)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

SYMPTOMS

loadTOCNode(1, 'symptoms');You use Automatic Updates (Svchost.exe) to scan for updates or to apply updates to any applications that use Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. Then, you experience issues when you use the following update mechanisms: •Microsoft Update•Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)•The Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.0•Microsoft Systems Management Server Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (SMS ITMU)Some of the applications that use Windows Installer include Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office XP, and Microsoft Windows Defender. These applications experience the following issues: •The Svchost.exe process may spike the CPU usage to 100 percent during update detection or update installation. Also, the Svchost.exe process causes the computer to stop responding for various lengths of time

AS I stated in a previous post there are quite a few causes for this issue. refer to that post & look for solutions if this post does not apply.

Thanks everyone. I checked out some other posts and they were helpful. I ran SpySweeper and found a trojan - I quarantined and deleted it. This might fix the problem but I've been having this issue for a while so I'll try taking a look at the automatic update thing and see if I that might help.

I get this too alot when I boot up my laptop.

By ending the process (svchost.exe) I can no longer view nearby wireless signals. It says "windows cannot configure your wireless now because you have something else configuring it". But I don't and restarting fixes this, but once again svchost eats up all my cpu.

Annoying, cuz it's not spyware/malware/virus as I've scanned plenty.

I have had this issue with my wifes system for some time as well... just too lazy to investigate... the wife hates it when I go digging in her system... lol. She usually gets in trouble for installing some crap softare or what not...

svchost.exe Network Services blah blah blah...

its a collection of other services that are grouped into 1 item... there is a program for looking INSIDE these available from SysInternals.. (now M$), cant recall exactly what it was... want to say ProcessExplorer... but not for sure... try it.

I recently had to troubleshoot an issue like that. A brand new top of line T60 with 2 GB of ram and a fresh build. It would slow down to hell and gone but there's be no indication on the task manager of any significant CPU usage. One of the onsite techs told me that if I'd already checked for malware, then it was most likely window's automatic update (svchost.exe) I stopped the service, disabled it and rebooted. Voila. Everything went back to normal.
