zd8000 powers off

I have a zd8000 in 'brand new' shape, at least in appearence.
It was used for a few months and has since been in storage.
A manager handed it to me and said 'this doesn't work'

When I power it on, I see the HP splash page, after 4 or 5 seconds it shuts off.
If I hit escape, some stuff flashes by (build date, mem size, mouse initialized, etc.) But it still shuts off with in 4 or 5 seconds.
Hitting pause, does not pause the boot.

I re-seated the RAM and HD.
I got a new power adapter, power seems to be ok....
I have the manual to disassemble.
Just wondering if there were any other possible 'easy' things to check....

Also, how much would you be willing to spend to get a zd8000 running?

thanks for any advice

cant re-install. The laptop doesn't boot. No Post, can't access the BIOS.
It shuts off in about 4 seconds, regardless of what I do.....

Reinstalling Windows is not the answer. One problem that the zd8000's had was overheating, especially the 3.6Ghz. models. In addition, the battery was under the GPU and could also cause overheating. Keeping the fans and vents clear was a definate necessity.

In all probability, the system board is damaged. Replacement would be the only answer.

I thought that might be the case, but was hoping that someone would have a quick fix....
any good sources for buying mother boards?
is it 'worth' fixing?

If you take care to keep the vents and fans clear and clean, the laptop is worth saving. I had few problems with mine other than a defective battery that overheated and failed.

eBay is probably the best bet for parts other than HP itself.
