XPS M1710 and XP 64 bit

Hey guys,

I have yet to get my new laptop and I have been pondering about going 64 bit. There are lots of improvements as have been reported at planetamd64 and it looks like things are very stable in terms of drivers. Has anyone of you in this forum taken the plunge and gone with 64 bit XP on their machine? Heck even SP2 is out for it. Looks like a great OS to switch to in the interim before Vista SP1 comes out.

Its pretty much based off of Windows 2003 server code so we all know its got great performance and memory management and has got a revamped task scheduler.

i ran it on my desktop for quite a while, and it worked great (ended up upgrading it to Vista 64-bit). had it running on my notebook for a little while too, and it didnt work so great there. something weird would cause it to lose time (so much that it'd be like an hour and a half behind after having the machine on for a few hours), reboot and it would be back to normal time. didnt have the problem in the Linux partition (dual-booted), so not sure what was going on. ended up killng that one and going back to XP Home.

THanks for the input. I am gonna give it a quick shot and see if it will work what with the drivers and everything. So you had no problems with the drivers then?

currently you are not going to see much of a perfomance improvement & you will find & limited number of drivers available. Unless you have a specific need for a 64bit OS I recommend sticking with 32 at least until they come out with SP1

P 64 bit is already on SP2 because it is based on the same codebase as windows 2003. I read a bunch of performance reviews and the performance is on the level with 32 bit XP if not more. Some benches are a bit off but I am not going to notice 2-3 seconds difference in software I am never gonna use anyway. You are right though about the drivers being limited but it is worth a shot to see if I can get my laptop setup with what I need.

I am more interested in the fact that XP 64 bit has no problems with RAM, is a based off of the best OS Microsoft has written, has been tried and tested, has nLite v 1.3.5 for it, has SP2 and runs games etc etc.
