The background I call ragdoll...looks like a chick that was in a meteor stom. I'll post it up in a sec so you can get a copy. It's one of my 3 favorites..

I was looking into gettig thme to stay lit. Unfortunately it doesn't look like there is anyway to bypass the 3 second timer

Hmm, I kinda like them just coming on upon button press but having them on always would be kinda interesting...I just got my palmrest replaced but as soon as I get a chance, I'll see what can be done hardware-wise. I really hope the bios doesn't whine about it.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the reason the background interested me is because I like rag-doll physics

hahah weird i use that one on the right. I get shit from everyone who sees it. I end up changing it to the windows XP flower background when family is around so they dont say, "What is that?" "That sure is depressing" "Is that a girl or a boy?" It's an amazing painting though.

nice work. looks clean.

I enjoyed my black keyboards on the I9300 and I9400... but I must admit that the silver keyboard on the XPS is far better feeling to touch and type on.

Welll there were 2 versions of the 1710 keyboard- The Grey one, then the silver one which definitely has a better feel.

That is the silver keyboard I am using btw. I like the feel as well & did a painstaking button swap lol.

Is that keyboard different to the (black) M90 keyboard? Which has a nice feel, I find.

I'm sure it's the same model keyboard just a different color. I love the 1710 keyboard. it is very responsive & has just the right tactile response.

Will the 1710 Keyboard work on an M170?

Nope, unfortunately it won't work. Dell changed the keyboard connector from a nice snap- in type on the M170 to a cheezy thin film connector on the later models. Other than that the keyboards are identical. Good luck!

My Gen 2 XPS has the same style (it's called a rubbon cable) they are just different sized ribbons.

It's not the ribbon cable itself that is the problem. It is the the end of the ribbon cable that is different. I built my M1710 from parts and originally tried to build it using my XPS Gen2 lappy as the donor (a complete waste of time as almost nothing is compatible between the two models). Anyway, I certainly was surprised when I tried to plug the Gen2 keyboard connector into the M1710 M/B and couldn't find the familiar receptacle I was expecting. My Gen2 keyboard had a nice push-on type plug while the M1710 has just a small tab on the side and at the end of the flimsy ribbon cable that locates it in the M1710 M/B keyboard socket. (There is actually no connector on the end of the M1710 ribbon cable.) Then you actually have to thread the ribbon cable end into the socket and hold it in the correct position (using the tab as the guide) while trying to fold down a small retainer to secure it. It isn't easy to do, especially the first couple of times you try. However, with practice it gets easier. BTW, like you, I opted for a black keyboard so I purchased an M90/9400/E1705 keyboard as I like the black keys better. Cheers!

Oh I've never had a problem with that clip. Of course I can't tell you how many times I've taken it apart lol
