Help! CPU temperature is incorrect and causes overheating!!

Thread Starter
I have a m7700 and recently it has been shutting down due to overheating. I installed Notebook Hardware Control to monitor the temps. For some reason the CPU temp is reported occasionally at 32º F or 0ºC for a while and then it will correctly go to about 100º F or 45º C. Since it thinks the CPU is so cold the fans don't turn on and then it overheats.

Is the only thing that could be the cause be a faulty temp sensor? Does anybody know how to replace just the sensor, or do I have to replace the whole heatsink?

Thanks

did you try GetThermal program from the download section?
i think it will read your CPU temp correct

I tried that too. It also reports strange temps at times

I had this exact same problem with Notebook hardware control (Area 51 m5550 though). I thought my cpu temp reader was broken also. I then installed I8kfanGUI to check the Temps (along with many others but for some reason the one made specically for Dells is the only one that worked haha.... the fan control and such doesn't work but the CPU temps read correctly). Try that one also, it worked for me even though it was one of the less likely ones i figured to work.

Thanks but the problem seems to be directly with the temp probe. Its not just NHC or GetThermal that are reading it incorrectly. The mobo or whatever controls the fans is reading the temp wrong too. Thus the CPU overheats and shuts down because it is seen at 32º F

Sounds like a bad sensor or connection... I'd call support.

I am having the same prob. with my 7700. Do the fans kick into overdrive when the comp. shuts off due to overheating? Did the heatsink work?

Check sensor connectors and cable.
Shutdown problem continue unless FN+F2 is active?

Another option.. buying this

Fn+F2 makes fans spin at full rpm, only if you flash whit new BIOS can enabled this function. Newest BIOS Unlock Fn+F1 and Fn+F10 too. Can download from: ftp://aliendl.alienware.com/Mobile/7700/BIOS/

Sorry to necropost, but I am having the same problem.
1) Is there any disadvantage to keeping FN+F2 on all the time?
2) Is this problem serious enough to go without my laptop for 6-7 weeks while it sits in the depot?

There is no disadvantage to keeping the fans on 100% all the time besides the noise. I would just try to get a new heatsink and not send it back to AW as it will be very expensive.
