Which would be the processor for me?

Thread Starter
Core Duo 1.66 Ghz
Core Duo 2.0 Ghz
Core 2 Duo 1.66 Ghz
Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz

Out of the 4 which would be best for me?

I do a lot of multitasking.
I run Photoshop CS2 quite a bit
I also run computer aided engineering programs
such as Solid Edge and AutoCAD.
As well as MatLab for mathematical programming.

Whats the difference in Core Duo and Core 2 Duo also?

Would I be able to tell a difference in 1.66 and 2.0 Ghz Models?

differnece between CD and C2D is CD is 32-bit and C2D is 64-bit

As of right now, there is no point in getting 64 bit processor because to really take advantage of 64bit processing, your OS has to be 64-bit and the program itself needs to be 64-bit.

C2D is the best processor out there right now though, and it has better heat consumptions along with slightly better battery life.

Get the best you can afford. I doubt you'd see a big performance increase with the clock speed, but it could help with a lot of processing that Photoshop and Autocad do.

i agree. i'd also vote for the core 2 duo processor. in pure calculation power (at least in superpi and possibly others) the core 2 duo 2.0ghz has as much power as my 2.33ghz core duo. matlab and autocad seem to work fine on my system, and matlab isn't all that processor hungry, and at least for the stuff i was using it for, a pentium m 1.6ghz worked fine.

you'll also get double the level 2 cache with a Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz or higher, as compared to any of the other 3 options you listed.
