I was trying to update a program in Ubuntu (Edgy), by entering

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

It stopped GNOME but I could not get it to start back up again no matter how hard i tried. Like me alias says I am a Linux noob. Anyway, I hard rebooted and started everything up again, but now Beryl will not load properly. It says it is running, but none of the AWESOME effects I love are working plus the window manager is not emerald. Just wondering if anyone can help me with this?

By the way I am dual-booting with XP MCE.

ok... first things first... what is your hardware (video card) and what drivers are you running (if nvidia: nv or nvidia, if ati : fglrx or ati or radeon) ?

secondly, are you trying to run it via xgl, aiglx, or (if nvidia) nvidia composite ?

less importantly, why are you not on feisty yet?

I'm pretty sure I have an Intel 945 graphics card. Not really sure how to check what drivers I am running. Also I think I was trying to run Beryl via XGL. The reason I have not upgraded to Feisty yet is because I was using Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 1.3 (http://ubuntusoftware.info/Ubuntu_Ultimate_1.3), which is basically a souped up version of Edgy Eft. Ubuntu Software is coming out w/ an Ultimate Version based on Feisty soon so I will upgrade then. Also, beryl came installed w/ Ultimate so I didn't set it up.

Ok so I removed Beryl from the startup programs and everything else runs smoothly. I tried uninstalling Beryl and then reinstalling to no avail. I am really trying to avoid reinstalling Ubuntu if possible so thankx for trying to help me out.

don't worry about it. There are other issues too. I am just going to re install Linux. Thanks for your help abf I will re-post if I run into more problems.
