Do you think I've gone ga ga?

Personally, yeah, i think i have. But my main problem these days is not my mental status, its my WUXGA screen. I've had it for a while now, i'm actually from Pakistan, my mom was visiting family in the US and brought back what i ever so excitedly ordered. My i8600. I didn't know a dang think about 1920 x 1200 resolution, but i thought it would be the best for me. I think the font is too small, and i know i have the LCD bleed issue. I couldn't send it back since no one was going back to the US from Pakistan. I'm way over my one month period. And i feel like buying myself the WSXGA+ screen. Is that the most ridiculous thing you've read on this forum so far? I haven't come across someone who wants to swap a WUXGA for a WSXGA. What bugs me most is that some pages on the internet just appear so midget sized that its not even funny.

What i need to know is this:
1- Does anyone have an opinion on WSXGA resolution?

2- Are there any games out there that utilize native WSXGA resolution?

3- Which manufacturer should i be looking at? I understand that the Hitachi's are a no no.

4- Can someone please provide me with a part number for the recommended screen?

Thanks, and sorry about the lack of pharagraph usage. I'm from Pakistan and lately i've been trying to find some nukes in my back yard. No luck, will keep you posted.

Hey, I have actually heard of a few people wanting to do a swap like that, because of the resolution hurting their eyes, etc.... so you're not completely mad (just a little).

1. Yeah, I find it great. I had the WUXGA on my i8500 and whist the extra real estate was great, the small size of everything was murder on the eyes. In my new i8600 I have the WSXGA and am loving it! There is still plenty of room and my corneas are no longer detaching!

2. Not many, because not too many games support Widescreen resolutions (just like not many supported the 1920 x 1200). One I have found though is GTA: Vice City, it looks supurb at 1680 x 1050! So they are out there, but are somewhat rare.

3. Go with the Samsung, they are the best as far as the WSXGA is concerned.... thats the brand I have, and as I said it is brilliant in colour, clarity and contrast.

4. Don't have the part number at the moment(am at Uni, typing this right before tutorial!), but will hopefully post back with the part number for you when I get home tonight.

Keep us posted on the nuclear situation

1. Fantastic.
2. Any game that supports wide screens will support WSXGA+ natively.
3. SAmsung. Shoot for that one and none other.
4. Sorry .

So let me ask you guys this, if i have a bleeding and dull last quarter of the screen LCD, and i only have a one year limited, can i get a new screen for free? Or should i go ahead and pay for a WSXGA?

Now, i'm a little confused. People who get their LCD changed, do they do that during the 30 day money back period or can they do that through the life of their warranty?

Hi,
You can get it replaced under warrenty because its faulty. But the problem I see with that is it's a US Inspiron in Pakistan..... obviously a no go for the warrenty as it would only be supported in the US (they probably won't ship replacement parts to Pakistan.... but you could call and give it a try).
Heres the part number for that WSXGA screen:
7T774 Liquid Crystal Display, WSXGA+, NO-SPWG, 15.4, Samsung
Cheers,

Rao -- I'm in the same boat as you. I just contacted Dell to see if I can arrange a swap to a Samsung WSXGA+. Given my previous unsatisfactory dealings with tech and customer support, I'm not optimistic about how Dell will handle this, but I'll keep you posted on what happens.

I think the WUXGA resolution is gonna be a lot better on a 17" widescreen. Hopefully, such a screen will be available by June.

I think i could arrange to have the screen delivered to the US, shouldn't be a problem, we Pakistani's smuggle. Just kidding.

JSWRITER- I won't even ask for a refund for the WSXGA vs WUXGA trade if they allow it. Otherwise i'll just buy one.

But, please, let me know how they've responded to you.

STU- Thanks for the part number- appreciate.

Oh, Akbar, check your PMs.

Rao,
Dell has support centers in India and carry out complete support there. I believe it will be cheaper for you to go/send notebook to India and get it fixed.
Another thing, Try to use large fonts in the display settings to help with those tiny font issues.

Skywalker,
You're right about support centers in India, and i would pbably try that approach too. But i doubt that they'll have parts for 8600s, but i'll give it a shot. I am actuallu running my system at 120 dpi, so i think its about as large as it can get without noticeable blurring.

I also have a bleed issue, so i thought, why not try and kill two birds with one stone?

JSWRITER- Any luck so far with contactinf Dell?

A drawback in sending the notebook to India from Pakistan, its a bit tempting for them, you don't know what kind of bomb it'll come back with

Rao -- Once again, my loathing for Dell resurfaces. After a couple of e-mails and phone calls to tech support, I finally received an answer. Dell e-mailed a two-page, 16-step procedure to determine whether my LCD is defective. FHAT THE WUCK????????????? They didn't address the issue of exchanging the WUXGA for WSXGA+ at all. I, too, offered to take a flat-out trade with no refund. Dell support is absolutely the worst customer service operation I've ever had the displeasure of using. They just SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi there ....
Can you pls forward that e-mail dell sent you regarding the procedure to do.
Sorry to bother U. I know U must not be worried about Dell anymore but I'm not able to come to a conclusion yet w/ my system. So just want to check out.
Pls mail to netlaser9@yahoo.com.
Thanks in advance,
K.

I agree the "large" font (120 dpi) is not large enough. Go larger. If you choose the custom setting, then 150%, you get 144 dpi. Windows XP will then auto-install the appropriate fonts for the new size. You will not get blurring. Remember, the WUXGA screen can form letters with more pixels than any other screen size.

I also bumped the IE font size to "larger". I didn't go to "largest" -- I thought it was too big!

STU- The bomb.... yeah man, i did think of that. But, haven't you heard, we're making peace. Its about bleeping time!

JSWRITER- Dah!! Support does suck, and i'm not happy for you or for me. Well, they can go shove it for all i care, especially when people like you and me will be buying sagers, gateways, hypersonic's etc etc. Its not like we're restricted, at least in this case, we tried, and THEY messed up. I'm pretty upset with the build quality of my dell actually, and i doubt i'll be getting another one soon. I can't believe i paid 2500 dollars for this! Convert that to Pakistani rupees, and i could have bought a Mercedes SLR- 500........ extended into a limo.

ICEMAN- You're the man!! It looks good so far. And i'm going to keep it at 144 dpi for the next few days. Your input was invaluable. I'd gone up to 135 dpi before. But this is much more eye friendly.

JSWRITER again- Why don't you try it too, buddy. Maybe it'll get the better of you, and then we can show Dell some place where the sun don't ever shine (And i'm not talking about Iceland.)

Here's another question, and maybe Iceman will be able to help me out, but please, chime in all.

I've set my fonts to 144dpi, it looks just fine, except, when i ran adaware tonight, or for any other program, when the program gives you a "yes/no" option, i cannot see that option properly, its like it's being cut.

For example, adaware, i scanned, it gave me a bunch of cookies that it needed to remove, i checked the ones i wanted removed, i get a new, smaller window, which gives me a couple of options, they appear cut. Is there a cure for this? Or, have i not installed my fonts correctly while changing to a higher DPI setting?

Please help, since i like 144dpi.

Rao --

I use Spybot - Search and Destroy, so I figured what the heck, I will run it on my 8600. Everything was readable, but the list of "hits" -- you know, tracking cookies and etc. -- was kind of scrunched, vertically. I could still read it, but like I care. I think this is just one of those deals where some applications are just not programmed correctly for nonstandard dpi's.
