Do you think I've gone ga ga? - Page 2

Sorry guys, but this is a side-effect of increased DPI settings. Some fonts may not appear right, windows may be cut off, etc. You can usually see the part cut off by pressing the tab button, but that doesn't work for everything. That's why I chose the WSXGA for my i8600, I had the WUXGA on the i8500 and increased the DPI so my eyes weren't so sore.... and had that issue, I just put up with it, but when it came time to get the new system I went the WSXGA route (I hardly ever really utilised the capabilites of the WUXGA resolution except in one or two games).

are you suggesting that If I'm not an Avid Gamer then UXGA screen would probably be useless? How about using UXGA for watching DVDs or Live TV or Photo Editing?
hey man...im currently in NY and have my eyes on a 9100...according to ur complaints ur dell isnt even of good quality...i really wanna get the 9100 as a desktop replacement and show off when i go back to karachi..what do u suggest..shud i go ahead and get it?....ill be getting the regular screen with the 1280 MAX resolution so i shudnt have the display issues..let me know what u think..

edit: i have read this guys thread who just got his lappy.he claims its built well...i guess u got unlucky rao?

Like I said, 90% of the time 144 dpi works perfectly. The advantage of WUXGA is not in text-based applications anyway, it's in graphics. Pictures, DVD's, newer games are all much nicer to look at with 1900 x 1200 pixels displaying them. If you think the swimsuit models in body paint look good in the magazine, you should see them on this laptop!

Akbar- Lets just put it this way. If i had to get another laptop, it wouldn't be a Dell. I'm disappointed with construction quality. I'm dissapointed with the screen. And i'm disappointed with heat issues from the GPU. Actually, i'm also very disappointed with the keyboard. The only reason i got this lappy was because it was the first centrino which popped up with a 128mb 9600pro.

But maybe i really am unlucky. I just haven't seen another 8600, they're hard to come across in my country...... impossible actually.

ICEMAN- I didn't really get the lappy for the swimsuit models. But now that you've mentioned it, i'm sure there are some waiting for me right now. Bye!

STU- My next laptop will be with a WSXGA screen. I'm pretty sure about it.

In no way am I suggesting that. I was just saying that I hardly ever used its capabilities, becasue I am not into much image editing or anything, only office apps, websurfing and gaming. Other people whom do image editing, graphics design, etc would find the WUXGA invaluable.

PS: Keep in mind that DVD's are in 720X480, so either way they are stretched.... so it looks just as good on an WSXGA as a WUXGA (trust me, I had the i8500 w/ WUXGA, and I can't tell the difference in DVD quality).

I'm pretty upset with the build quality of my dell actually, and i doubt i'll be getting another one soon. I can't believe i paid 2500 dollars for this! Convert that to Pakistani rupees, and i could have bought a Mercedes SLR- 500........ extended into a limo.

JSWRITER again- Why don't you try it too, buddy. Maybe it'll get the better of you, and then we can show Dell some place where the sun don't ever shine (And i'm not talking about Iceland.)
Hey Rao! I've tried messing with the fonts, but it just never looks right to me. I'm with you on telling Dell to shove it...hard! It's too bad, 'cuz I was one of the 8600's big-time fanboys until my graphics problems started. Compound that with my miserable experience with Dell's support morons and I've turned a complete 180 on them. My sig indicates my next notebook. I'm just waiting to see the $$ on Hypersonic's version of the m:860...a review would be nice, too...before deciding between it and an 8790/GX7. After that, my 8600 goes to eBay-land and my Dell troubles go buh-bye fo' evah!! Or, I could relocate to Islamabad or Karachi and try swapping it for that Mercedes you mentioned!!

JSWRITER- Are you nuts? No Mercedes here, at least not at my place! I'm happy with my RX-7. At least it doesn't have font problems!

Try setting your DPI to 135 DPI or 141%. It's looking good for me so far.

That Voodoo does look nice. I hope you get the machine you want. As for me, I'm getting a new wife in 20 days. Well, to be fair, never been maried before. I hope my wife doesn't have any build quality issues.

Take ease man.

Wow...And people were laughing at me for getting and touting the SXGA. All the while I try to be the voice of reason...rather than just having to have the best on paper. (Which two months later is not the best anymore anyway)

I tried to say the UXGA was not "practiical" or needed on a 15.4 inch screen. People have been editing beautiful photos for years on less resolution displays. I have the equivalent on the Sony but that screen is only 10.6 inches and it gets tiring to read but neccessary there to get the "nornmal" real Estate covered.

I loved the "look" of the UXGA but realized The beauty of the screen would soon wear thin though the squint of the eyes. Many bought it though only because it was available and assumed any less would not be having the best. Not becasue they really had a need for 1900 resolution! Thats a lot on my 21" CRT!!! ( Yep I still believe CRTs are far better than LCDs ..if you have the room for them)

I would not trade my SXGA for a UXGA even if the UXGA lappy had a 1.7 Mhz Processor!!. The 1280 resolution is perfect for that screen and DVDS look as good on the Dell as the hi rez Sony screen. They don't make 1900x1200 pixel DVDs!!!! The SXGA + was an option but too many issues with Hitachi. The SXGA is a SAmsung and perfect LCD for that screen. As a side benifit the meager 5200 go VC does not have to work as hard to get decent gaming images to it.

Those of you who have an UXGA, please try and activate the Microsoft ClearType on your screens. You can find the Tuner here. needless to say, try it at native resolution. Please let us know if it improves the readability on your displays.

This works only on Windows XP.
Links don't work. I will try again later. BTW, the readability on my screens is great, with the fonts that XP automatically installed after I changed my dpi to 144. How can I tell if I am already using ClearType?
Those were working yesterday. hmmm.Sorry about that. I will contact MS and pray
post #33 of 39
i dont know if someone suggested this before to u but go over to the dell forums. and they have a sticky explaining how u can adjust the font size. i have the wsga and the fonts were small for me too, plus changing the dpi settings made some graphics blurry. u'll have to change the reg. settings for ie.. they explain how to do that though.
games run fine for me. no distortion. although i dont know my lcd's make.

The Dell forum instructions are a retrofit, for people who got their 8600's like, last year. I got mine last month, and didn't need to change my IE setup -- it was already set up correctly.
I got my XPS this Monday, and most of the graphics in IE were blurry.
Sooo -- they built your XPS last year? Probably not. Maybe I will go take another look at my IE graphics!
OK, I went back and checked the Dell forum sticky thread regarding IE. There are now two sets of instructions, one for jagged fonts and the other for blurry graphics. For blurry graphics they recommend turning off the automatic resizing of images, which I did anyway because it bugged me. The default setting for IE is to automatically resize images, so I was mistaken.

Best of luck with the wife!!! I'm single, so I can still spend a few thousand dollars on ultra-high powered notebook computers just so I can play $50 video games with the latest graphics.

I'm also considering the HP Pavilion ZD7000 since it just got a new WSXGA+ (1680x1050) 17" screen. I wish 8790/GX7 would use that screen. The ZD7000 looks quite a bit more bulky than the 8790/GX7. I'm gonna give it a few weeks. If nothing changes, I'll give the ZD7000 a try.

See ya, man!

Thanks for bringing it to notice jswriter. I just checked it. 17" screen looks awesome. I couldnt find any reviews yet or specs on who makes it for HP. I dont think any of the retailers carry it yet too. Anyhow, I was seriously considering 9100 but HP zd7000 seems back in the game mainly due to its screen. I still need info on their international support. dont know if it even exists.
