can a 9750 use an Opteron?

Hello,
I actually have two questions..the first being, can I use an Opteron CPU on my 9750? and secondly is it possible to upgrade my mainboard to the new AM2 chipset? I saw that Widow PC laptop already has a 9750 variant that uses the same housing but with an AM2 chipset. Right now finding a decent 939 chip is very difficult. If anybody has any advise I would appreciate it.

pretty sure your stuck w/ the single core turions

The 9750 does not support the turions...it uses 939 pin athlon 64, X2, and FX chips. I know that the 939 Opterons are basically the same chips of the FX and X2 but I wonder if the bios supports it since I can no longer find a decent speed chip for my laptop.

lol, my bad......I didn't realize this was the Sager forum and I swear your post had 9700 (I thought you ment the AW one)

My guess would be yes the opteron would work, though I would talk to someone who has done it.

AFAIK 1xx series socket 939 opterons work in 9750.
Some resellers sold 9750/D900K as mobile workstation with Opteron CPU.

I used to have an opty 185 that ran 2.8 GHZ 24/7, that was a sweet sweet chip.

Out of curiousity, I'm running Vista x64 with an FX-60, is there any program/custom BIOS I can use to overclock the processor? I've been trying to flash OC the video card but have had no luck, rivatuner does allow me to OC the card in Windows however.

Try RMClock. Works for me on winxp64. It can overclock but I use it for downclocking because my 9750 overheats.

Whoa whoa whoa WHOA! Before you make any decisions on your next purchase you should really sit down, relax and think about exactly what you want. First of all, is this something that will be able to stand up to technology in the near future? Will it support the latest and greatest? You don't want to be standing there with your c@@k in your hands or anything. So my last and final advice to you would to reconsider your purchase, and Olympus FE-180 will not fit in a socket 939.

You may be thinking, "WTF? What does this have to do with anything?"

I'm in the same boat you are, I got the 9750 over a year ago with the 3800x2 and am now looking to max out my motherboard since the 939 is discontinued. I called Sager today and they told me that my 9750 could not run an Opteron not even with a BIOS flash. I do not know however if I was just getting a "safe" cover our butts answer or if I truly can not run a 939pin Opteron185. I would love to hear a few more success stories before I invest.
