A little help for a PC noob!

Hi guys! I usually deal with PC (Dell) laptops, but my son is in need of an Apple lappy!

I was looking at the White IMAC. 2.0 Core 2 duo, 80 gb HD, 1 gb Ram for roughly $1200.

My question is, do you guys know if I should pull the trigger on this one now or is there something else on the horizon that I should waite for. I need this laptop to last him for 2-4 years for basic school use.

Any info or advice would be great, Thanks everyone!

How long can you wait?

WWDC is less than a month away and new stuff might be launched either during WWDC itself or during the next couple weeks/months after. Personally, I would wait all the way until school started before deciding...especially as Apple usually does a back to school promotional deal.

Also, iMacs are desktops; MacBooks are white and black laptops.

Well, speak of the devil, if you want to buy a MacBook now's probably the best time to do it because they were just updated and probably won't be updated again until the end of the year or the first couple months of next.

from an upgraded stand point, yes now is the right time to buy.

from a "keep your son off his ass this summer" standpoint, buy 2 weeks before school. itll be the same machine then that youd get now.

RTETNETYNDFB VXBZXVAER....... I just dropped $1600 at the Apple Store last night! Talk about crappy timing. Well I have 14 days to return it. Looks like I'll have to do that then! Thanks again guys!

I agree with most of the others on this one. Wait until you are about 2-3 weeks until school starts, then get him the machine. The likelihood of the price changing is pretty much nil, so you don't have that to worry about. You dont want to get it right before school so that way he has a chance to get fully adjusted to the system.

If you got it last night they might just upgrade you. Call Apple before it ships, if it hasn't already.

dont forget that by then there will probably be a chance of some refurbs. which will cut the new price down by almost 200$ probably. if thats the route he wants to take, its a good one! just make sure to allow an extra 2 weeks on top of when you want to recieve it (ie order 4 weeks prior to school) that would be my decision

Thank you again for the info guys! Well I bought the whole set up from the apple store over here in Hawaii. When I priced it online, it came out to the same amount. I own a Dell XPS laptop. I was one of those who say " I will never buy a Mac". But I have to admit. I really like the laptop we bought for our kid. It's easy to use, and for some strange reason, I really love "garageband."

Well Apple has won alot of respect from me and I hope you guys don't mind me hanging out and picking your brains some.

BTW, I called the store I bought the MacBook from and they told me I can exchange it when thet get their stock in of the just updated MacBook. Another plus in my book. They are making it very painless for me to exchange it out.

Oh yea, I just realized that this thread title SHOULD be " A little help FOR a pc noob" not a little help FROM a pc noob" Sorry guys!

Thank you Kakaze! I've been out of town, but I just got back yesterday and swapped out the Macbooks. It's a pleasure being on this side of the fence!
