Can't Decide Between Toshiba and Dell

Going to college next year so in need of a new laptop. I was thinking Satellite A200-ST2041 - Toshiba Laptop or Inspiron E1405. Both are built to be almost exactly alike. Difference is the 128mb video card on the toshiba and about 125 dollars more. I'm looking for a laptop that will get through college. I need something that'll last me awhile and not give me a bunch of problems in the long run.

I'd say go with the Dell if you're needing it for school. I'm not familiar with Toshiba's own service, but Dell's is rather quick. 99% of the time I am at the customer's machine the day after they call in. Toshiba does make excellent systems, but Dell is just as reliable. The only reason you see so many disparaging remarks about Dells is that they sold ALOT more systems than some other brands.

stay away from toshiba like the plague. not very reliable at all. that said, dell might not be built to very high spec, but if anything goes wrong their service is pretty good

I agree with toshiba's service being terrible although I havnt own one since 2001 so things could have changed then but ive never had any good luck with japanese brand notebook service excluding Fujitsu.

How are the inspiron screens? I've heard it light leaks from the bottom and there's bad glare.

GO WITH DELL. My Toshiba picked up horrible issues 6 months after warranty. The hard drives dies, now the fan is the worst thing I have ever heard come from a computer. Customer service sucks, and I can never get any help from the people. My AC adapter died too, actually 2 weeks after warranty. The service rep offered me to "grab one from the back" for $85. I later bought a kensington universal adapter- their service is awesome.

well, as for toshiba, the service is excellent. DHL came to pick up notebook, had it back after 2 days.

As for the quality of the laptops. its pretty decent, my toshiba m30 is running thits 3rd year and had one hdd problem.

Have you considered Asus?

btw, its always smart to buy extended warranty

Do NOT buy Toshiba. horrible horrible support and service. I am talking about minor things as well not just major like having to send iit in etc. their website sucks azz and too many problems simply pop up. I bought one and so did my father - I will never ever ever buy one again. I know that the prices are tempting and they are everywhere you go like office max/depot, staples, circuit shitty, BB, compusa etc. they are freaking everywhere. I would highly recommend a dell - my friend is very happy with my suggestion to go dell. best of luck!!
