i9400 Processor Upgrade? T2400 to T7600. Help please

Hi all.
I currently have an inspiron 9400 with a Intel Centrino Duo T2400 Processor. I am buying a Nvidia 7900 Gs to upgrade my ATI 1400 graphics card and am now wondering if it is possible to manually upgrade the systems processor? I can get the T7600 Core 2 duo processor for relatively cheap and so am tempted to do this if it is possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

relatively easy to do? and a decent performance gain? Also what would be a good Core 2 duo processor to replace the t2400 that is slightly less powerful than the t7600 if i dont get that

You might as well, since you have to take the palmrest off the system to change the video card anyway. After you get the palmrest off you just unbolt the heatsink turn the cam-lock screw on the socket a 1/2 or 1/4 turn (depending on who made the socket) and lift the old CPU out of the socket. Drop the new one in and reverse the previous steps. The CPU doesn't require any more effort to change than the Video card. HOWEVER, before you change CPUs make sure your BIOS is the latest revision. If you haven't updated it you could have a BIOS that won't recognize a C2D.

Cheers Mr Evil. I recently flashed to bios revision A08 - that ok ye?

Oh and any need for a new power adapter battery cell after i install a 7900 and new processor? Im not too bothered about power consumption when using without ac power. Thanks again :P

That revision is fine. You don't need a stronger PSU for the GS. Though I think I remember someone saying that having the 130 W PSU allowed them to get higher clocks after the GSX mod.

Before you change out that processor you might want to order some AS5 for the CPU.
Not sure if you plan on overclocking the GPU on this card, if you are it would be wise to AS5 the GPU core as well.

As far as the best processor, it's going to be the T7600. the T7600G will offer no performance gain on the 1705 (cannot overclock it)

Go to the Dell web site and download the service manual for your computer. It tells you almost all you need to know.

I used the thermal conductive silver particle paste, Arctic Silver 5 (AS5), to replace the thermal pad that couples the heat sink to the cpu. You can find info on the web about the precautions, and best method to apply the thermal paste in addition to the excellent info that you can download from the AS5 web site. There are other thermal conduction coupling products available, but AS5 appears to be the most popular.
