TSST TS-L632D completely whacked in Vista - Help?

I've been really frustrated this week with this drive and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as I'm at my wits end and have searched Google endlessly for an answer.

I have the TSST TS-L632D DVD drive and have been having MEGA problems under Vista with it...I have to reboot my E1705 everytime I want to make a DVD/CD because once a burn is done I recieve "No Device Detected!" and the drive vanishes from Windows Explorer. Sometimes even on reboot the drive isn't recognized.

With no thanks to Dell so far I've discovered it seems to be a problem with Vista which I find rediculous since this is supposedly a "Vista Certified" system and the drive is working 100% better in XP so far (No problems). Problem is, the laptop is only a month old and it included Vista Home Premium, NOT XP.

So far I've not found a single fix for this problem and Dell told me it was a software (Vista) issue. Then why did they sell me Vista with the laptop?

I have the same problem and I don't have that problem. Have you tried reinstalling software/OS?

What warranty do you have? The reason I ask if if you have complete care and your drive "somehow" breaks then they will send you a new one. I know this because my girl friend did break my drive and I had me new one within 24 hours. Also if you have a normal warranty convince dell that your drive has bad burns even with XP and eventually they will send you a new drive. The reason I say it would be best for them to get you a new drive is that I have Vista installed and I burn 3 DVDs every three days and I haven't got a bad burn yet. I think it may be something with the Firmware or the maker of that drive that has problems with Vista.

The basic 1 year warranty.

The thing is I trashed the HD, shoved XP onto it and the drive seems to be working flawless in the few days since I did it. I mean, I haven't had a bad burn since 1998, this is insane. My main problem though is that the drive disappears completely from Explorer or any program accessing it for no random reason unless I reboot under Vista. 'No Device Detected'.

Okkk....?

It was a fresh install of Vista, barely a month old as it was. I'm actually wondering if it was NERO causing some conflict somewhere.

What drive do you have? And what firmware? I've already tried reflashing the drive with what is listed on Dell's support site however the firmware on the drive was already up to date with it. No go...Same issues. I've also tried removing and reinserting the drive into the slot to have Vista rerecognize it...Also...No go.

What burning software are you guys using and is it under Vista? Thanks.

The reason I said this was is you convince Dell to send you a new drive then chances are you will get a drive of a different maker or even the same drive with a different firmware, either way, chances are the new drive will work fine.

I've only had the system 30 days....I have a case # from my prior phone call. The guy seemed adamant about NOT sending me a new drive after requesting one. Will something like this be covered over the normal 1 year warranty?

The tech had me do the simple hardware check prior to OS boot and the drive passed fine with a green check, under XP its working fine too...Its very odd and why I think its Vista and probably not the drive itself.

I wish Dell had Pioneer's.

Either way they should be the ones to fix it. If that means sending you a new drive you can bet your @ss if it was me I would be getting that new drive. If the drive is having multiple bad burns then it would be questionable that it was a bad drive. Thus they need to look in to it more then their little diagnostics. Did you talk to an American? You have only called one, correct? If so call them again and say its still happening. Its completely worthless without a drive and that is not your fault. If you are a day under 30 days, tell them you will return it if they don't replace the drive. Thats drive has something to do with the problem because many of us here on NBF have Vista on out laptops and our drives work fine, thus that drive either is broke or has compatibility problems with Vista. Either way its the drive, not so much Vista.

Think of it like this, if you install a program on XP and it works great and you install that same program on Vista and it doesn't work right (Punch! Home Design for example). That situation would not be Vista problem, that would be the software being incompatible. This to me is the situation you have with the drive and thats what I would explain to them.

Oh I am not against sending it back, I just haven't had enough free time to sit on the phone with them. My first and only conversation (American tech, I was shocked) took over an hour and accomplished nothing at all. Unfortunately I am just barely over 30 days, I love the laptop but this is a bit disconcerting...Its not so much bad burns but the fact the drive seems to come and go as it pleases. Actually so far the DVD burns have been fine although the CD burns were a bit rough at first but I figured it was bad media.

Thanks for your help man, its appreciated.

Get additional warranty. It's worth it.

Wouldn't they be amazed if you upgraded to Complete Care which I do recommend and then the drive magically broke *hint* *hint*

Sounds to me like you may need to check your lappy's bios version, if there is a new one, flash it, and make sure you have installed the latest INTEL chipset drivers.

I actually did both of these already although the INTEL drivers on Dell's driver site are from mid 2006 or so however I DID update my BIOS from A07 to A08...I've backed up my XP install with Acronis, tonight I am going to reinstall Vista again from scratch. In the meantime after speaking with Dell and a nice young lady there, it sounds like they are going to be sending me out a new drive. Waiting for a return call on it.

New Drive=Problem fixed

Well, as I said...I went back to XP due to this whole problem in the first place but now that I should be getting a new drive sent out I'll get a head start and reinstall Vista in the mean time. When the new one arrives, I'll slap it in and hopefully be good to go.

Good point I kinda forgot about that

Good luck, let us know...

Hmn. I kind of remember the CD burning software provided by Dell has problem with windows media player 11 update, and there was patch to fix it. Main problem that was occuring with XP and the software was some run time error every time the software was used. I'm not sure if it's related to your problem though. I can barely recall because I remember searching for answers for hours with my old unit, and finally found the patch, and the error was gone for good..

I think the patch was provided by roxio.
