GPUs are much harder to shrink than CPUs, as ATI found out the hardway, which is why a 65nm GPU is so much more expensive than a 90nm GPU. You get more chips per wafer, but yields are not as high. You are correct in that manufacturers dont do die shrinks, etc, althought i believe you are right, they can use whatever memory they want, they get the reference design and can tweak it as they wish. As for a G80 based GO, i dont think we will be seeing them, and the enthusiast 8800 we might be seeing this summer...i dont think its going to be a whole lot more powerful than the 7950 GTX, at least not as much of a drastic increase as the desktop versions.
Ahh alright, thanks for clearing that up. Yeah I get what you're talking about now, and I especially agree about actually having a true G80 mobile variant be the upcoming enthusiast card that everyone is waiting on. I don't really expect it to be leaps and bounds ahead of the current 7950GTX. Personally I'd be happy if it incorporated the unified shader architecture and gave full DX10 support. I do think there will be some performance increase, but at most modest gains in that regards.

Agreed, although i would like to point out, if nVidias next gen card/G90 is based on 65nm, they wont be as power hungry/hot and i think will be able to fit in a laptop just fine, and i think were going to see more than 8800GTX desktop power, in a laptop, but if i were to guess id say thats a year out. With nVidias past trends, we can expect a 9800GTX in November, although we didnt see an 8900GTX this spring, so we may in fact see the 89xx series in the fall. Who knows though, i hope ATI can whip something good up to give this stuff some competition, otherwise a 65nm based GPU is gonna be ridiculously expensive.

I HAD TO.....

After reading this and knowing what I know, I emailed this to them...
(shame on me )

Just wanted to inform you that your company is now the laughing stock of the online Notebook forum communities. We have more engineers than you can imagine (including me) that surf the boards. We read a reply email you sent to one of our members as well and frankly, we have come to the conclusion that your anticipated release (no later than the end of this month as your rep stated) of the Go 8800 SLI setups are false. Nvidia and other engineers have made it clear that they are having problems getting the 8800 series to function in a laptop configuration alone not to mention the ludicrous claim of SLI.

Read this, you'll love it: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread197136-3.html

You claim your company is going to get the 8800 before anyone else. This is because one of 2 reasons. 1 would be that they are not sure the chip is not a WMD and will not burn down the building it resides in, and being in Aus, they can feel safe the fire could not spread too far as you are on an island away from everything else. The other would be that your claim is BS and Clevo has the agreement and you are sucking off it seeing your laptops are the same build. Why would Nvidia give exclusive rights to you and not Clevo, Sager, Alienware, Dell, HP or another BIG shot that could and WILL sell more systems in a month than you put out in a year?

Your company has most likely lost A LOT of business due to your ability to "preconfigure" something that frankly does not exist in a releasable format and will not for some time. We also found that the reference picture you use on your site is a photochopped version of the photo on Nvidia's and Sager's site. Someone has removed the DVI port from the picture which GUARANTEES pretty much that your company is not going to be able to deliver. A high end SLI 8800 laptop with no DVI? No one will buy it unless they are stupid.

So we would like to welcome you as the current laughing stock of the Laptop industry.

Cheers!

*damn im evil sometimes*

And it is funny... after researching more, NO ONE is really offering the 8800, they are mainly saying it supports the Geforce Go 8 series. No specifics...

"Nvidia and other engineers have made it clear that they are having problems getting the 8800 series to function in a laptop configuration alone not to mention the ludicrous claim of SLI."

Got some kind of literature behind that?

I can at least infer that that is the case. the 8800's in Desktops draw INSANE amounts of power and expel tremendous heat. With last gen cards the 7900GT and GTS were single slot cards with small coolers on them. Look at the 8800GTS it has to have a dual slot cooler like the GTX. Getting the same processing power into a MUCH smaller form factor like a laptop is going to be quite difficult. I have a feeling that when we see a mobile 8800 it's going to be quite expensive and not perform as well as a desktop.

Is it Possible the Dual 9750GTX SLI faster than the SINGLE 8800GTX SLI ???
Can Anyone Please Tell Me ?
I would hope a single 8800m would outperform a dual 7950GTX setup. No one can really know, though. Not until the specs are released. Of course the current DX10 mobile card releases have pretty disappointing performance numbers...

Just ordered mine and will send in pics and 3dmark scores when it arrives currently has a ship date of 6/11/07. I wonder if it is going to have any battery life.

I think you are going to be VERY VERY disappointed. You are about to be the victim of a scam.

I hope you have a good credit card policy.

#1. There is no 8800M
#2. They call it a Go 8800 in your order..-The name format changed to 8xxxM
#3. they are running a desktop processor in it...

I imagine battery life will be "0" as this is a phantom machine. I spoke with these folks and every thing they said to me was a lie. this is not a part of PIONEER ELECTRONICS. They are a small little company that sent me such a line of BS I would not stop laughing.

I am going to laugh my ass off if it's a gigantic system with 2 desktop 8800' s in it that makes the 2010 look like an ultra-portable...

The specs they tout were taken from this article that was just as misleading ..

I can't believe it; so half of this thread is about how and why this "Dreambook" is a transparent scam, and this guy goes right ahead and orders one Well, I agree with Sol: The best he can hope for is that his credit card issuer is able and willing to take care of this for him...

Wait a second are you guys trying to say that the company took my money is not going to send me the laptop I ordered but they cant do something like that arent there laws in Australia and how am I going to show off to all of my friends at the next LAN party.

ROFL! Oh man you guys crack me up. Sorry but it was just a joke to see what everyone would say. Like I would spend six grand on a laptop with SLI, three hard drives, and without the cold fusion battery pack.

The problem is there are people out there that DO get taken & our concern was that you were on that path. I will admit your post is funny, but as I stated there are people out there that do get taken everyday.

I fully understand the heat and power issue. I was more so wondering if he had anything to back his statement up, because i quite honestly think he pulled it straight out of his ass. A 90nm based G80 will never fit in a laptop with any reasonable specs.

I love reading this kind of post. Everyone seems to know everything about heat dissipation and power the consumption of any given chipset.
If you do a search way on NBF you will find that we had all the same discussions about the 68xx to 78xx. All the experts said that it couldn't be done without causing fires and damage to reproduction organs. More importantly all the pro's here said that it couldn’t be done at all and no way could a laptop ever do SLI.
But, it was done, and it is NOT a desktop card it is a laptop card. These cards are re-engineered to fit and work great inside of the mobile platform and yes, it will have to sacrifice some performance from the desktop version.
We will have a Go88xx GTX, yes, it will be SLI and no, it will not perform like the desktop version but it will be a huge step up from the 79xx.
Just my 2 cents....
We have have not said it couldn't be done, we stated it could not be done without a die shrink.

PLZ do tell me how it performs cos am looking to buy one myself THXS

will ur new laptop have Dx 10 card ?
