I have a problem and i know it is the hard drive. It started a week before i knew what the problem was. For the first week when i was in windows and not doing any thing the computer would just completely lock up. Then one day when i turned it on, I have 2 80gig hdd in a raid 0 config, is said "problem is detected with array 1, and the status is Offline. then it proceed to boot and says the it cannot find the OS. it's usually hit or miss with the problem but it is gradually getting worse. If anyone knows the problem plz let me know

Sounds like the array is dying, which probably means one of your drives is dying. I'd back up anything you need ASAP and start pricing out a new drive. I don't know how to tell which one it is though... there might be a few utilities you can download that will help point out the drive...

Your hard drive is getting bad. It possible has bad sectors. That’s the same thing that happened tom me. After I backed up my data. I disabled the array and then tested each drive individually to see which one wanted to be replaced. i used hdd regenerator(this will attemp to recover and repair your bad sectors.
you can also use a boot cd with the hdd regenerator and other hdd tools for free.(just google Hiren's BootCD , the very first result.)

let me know how it goes, unfortunately i had to buy a new hard drive because it had too many bad sectors. Every time the computer would try to access the hard drive when it reaches a bad sector it would freeze.

alright, I got the Hiren's BootCD and i tried running the HDD Regenerator. It seemed like it was marking every single sector bad. I only had like 75mb scanned and it found like 150,000+ bad sectors, and it was just non-stop increasing 1000 bad sectors every 5 seconds. Once I figured out how long it would take to scan everything, about 12 days, I decided that I couldn't do that, so I stopped it and then i went into my raid utility and disabled my raid. Once I did that and tried some of the HDD Utilities none of the utilities could find either of the hard drives. So as of right now, I'm lost with what I should do. So peter13 maybe you can help me.

Well sounds like you were trying to scan the entire array, which was of course screwed up since one of the drives was. Re-run the utility you downloaded, running it on one drive then the other. This way it won't be trying to scan the array, which was of course fubar'd since it was striped over a bad disc.

yeah I tried rescanning it once I disabled the array, but the thing is it can't find any hard drives. None of the utilities can.

I see... I've never needed to disable my RAID array, but is there a way to format those drives after the array has been deleted? Again, I'm just throwing stuff out there that might help. Seems like a format might fail, but obviously it isn't seeing your drives, which could be because the format is all messed up now... can the RAID array builder find the drives?

The raid builder can find the one good drive, but can't find the other.

Well that seems pretty conclusive the one drive is dead. I don't know if you're still in warranty, but if so, AW should cover that. Otherwise, you might want to go ahead and call and find out the specifics so you can get the correct drive to rebuild the array.

does it need the same exact drive, or just another drive that is just the same size? Also do you know if there is anyway to get all of the stuff off of it so don't need to get a new os, and just put all of the stuff on the dead drive on the new one so that the comp will think nothing ever happened?

With the drive gone and the array destroyed your hard drives are worthless in terms of data recovery. You'll most likely need to reload the OS and any programs, and you'll want a drive of the same size, speed and cache size. Shouldn't be too hard to find: newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com. You'll need to rebuild the array after you install the second drive and then install the OS to that and everything. Imaging is another idea, but if you knew about that I doubt you'd be asking if you could recover the OS off the dead drive....

also you wouldn't happen to know how to determine which is the bad drive?

Wouldn't you be able to tell from that? Pull out one drive and if the RAID utility sees it, then you know the good one is still in the computer. Trial and error seems to be the best bet, I mean there's only two options here....

yeah it needs to be the same exact drive model, i skimed so i dont know if you mentioned what raid u were running but if u were running mirrored you can just rebuild your array and your data will still be there intact.
