500 dollar budget

Thread Starter
i need to buy a new desktop and my budget is 500 dollars

what im looking for
at least 1 gb ram
at least 250 gb hard drive
does NOT have to have a graphics card becuase ill be upgrading later
needs to come with a keyboard mouse speakers monitor

i dunno if this price is possible but considering the processor really doesnt matter... i think it might be doable if i buy a refurb or something

anybody have a suggestion on what i should get?

You should build it yourself.

I'd say you should look around the Dell outlet at the E520 and E521 since some of them get really low in price for a decent (non-gamer) system.

As Nyako said, you could also build yourself.

Yep. You could build a new computer with that budget and pretty decent specs, if you want to add some gaming to it you can get an NVIDIA 6200 video card to it with its own 256MB of video RAM for around $70.

I believe its ATI equivalent is the X1600. Both go for less than $100.

i started building you one off newegg until i saw you needed it to have a monitor also, for under 500$.

good luck, i think a refurb dell is about your best bet at that price point.

any decent monitor will be 125-150$ at least, so can you build a system with 350, with keyboard/mouse/speakers? i cant build something for that thats worthwhile.

a e6300, 1gb ram, decent microAtx mobo, and 250gb HD is 350 by itself.

even with a e4300, its still at 285 (300 shipped), and u would still need a case/psu (50$) keyboard/mousy/speakers(40-70), not to mention windows?

you can do it off newegg if you want custom parts, but youll get a better deal from DELL, and only if you have windows already

right on kgeier82, a dell from the outlet is your only hope.

*edit I just checked the outlet and the cheapest is $489, that doesn't include a monitor. I would suggest saving up a bit more or keep looking for an awesome deal.

hey MIT, i just checked and if he goes AMD (E521) They seem to go down to about $200.

for $209 there, was one with
250gb hd
1800 sempron
1gb ram
integrated graphics...but you could get under $500 even after adding a monitor

ive been looking into this myself too, to get a second desktop for linux (not gonna do it until July or so tho). dell had some large coupons on E521 recently (but they expired), was able to configure a E521 with an AMD x2 4000+ and widescreen LCD for $550 something, and of course less for LCD. not quite $500, but close

that deal expired, but i was able to get around that same price yesterday configuring parts on newegg, with a x2 3800+ (again with widescreen LCD), my configs were using 160GB HDD's tho.

upon cruising through newegg I guess a system can be built for this price.....I'll try to get a list going.

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion...asp?ID=4915391

Total comes to: $443.68 BEFORE TAX/SHIPPING

DOES NOT INCLUDE AN OS (either use linux or buy xp or vista for $89.99)
I came up with this build.

Highlights:
19" WS LCD (I owned this model for 4 months and it is good)
AM2 x2 3600 Brisbane (I own use this now and it is good also)
Has integrated graphics for now but can be upgraded
Includes mouse/keyboard/speakers

Lowlights:
PSU sucks (it should be fine with a 7600gt GPU, prob not much more)
80gb HD, can be easily upgraded

So I guess you can build an ok system for $500

i tried to build him a system too for under 500$, but your neglecting the fact he wants a 250gb HD, and will probably want to buy xp. there are systems that can be built for under 500$ sure, but not with the specs he stated he wanted. unless he wants a <100$ cpu, which is only worth it in a HTPC to me
