Acer Aspire 5100 BSOD

hey guys, new to the forum as you may notice however im at my wits end with my acer laptop. when i purchased it i did a clean install of windows removing all partitions, fresh start. everything working fine however i randomly get the blue screen of death.

event viewer records the only problems at the time of the blue screen of death as being ATAPI related and DISK related. bad block, time outs etc. so i thought ok i might have just had a duff hard drive. replaced the hard drive, brand new install and same problem.

i have replaced ATAPI.sys with other versions but still no joy. the errors also force the hard drive to run in PIO mode only meaning i have to uninstall the hard drive controller to get it back up to DMA.

the blue screen of death will report a different error code nearly everytime although all related to the same ATAPI and DISK problems.

i was wondering whether or not its because the hard drive and the dvd ram drive share an IDE and it needs a special ATAPI or a special driver that i deleted when i formatted. any suggestions would be much apprectiated

thank you

Atapi refers to the optical device, iow, your CD/DVD Rom. You might check into upgrading the bios also.

ive updated the bios to the latest version, got the blue screen again. i dont know if its significant but sometimes after the blue screen i get an error message on boot saying "failure fixed disk". this however is not the case because it will boot fine after a restart. the hard drive has been replaced as well as i thought this might of been the original problem.

You mentioned "clean install". Was that XP or Vista? I'd expect Vista as XP would be alot more stabilized as far as drivers, so this would not be so unusual for Vista as for XP.

the clean install was xp proffessional, cheers for the input

Jut wondering if you ever fixed your problem with you acer 5100 bsod problems, i have the exact same problems with mine. Changed hd ram restored at least 5 times, still having problems. especially on boot up, bios always hard time to find drive or puts weird lettering. Would like to know if you can help me out. Worked fine for the first year then deteriorated after that.
thanks in advance for any help you may give

Have you looked for a bios upgrade? I'm beginning to think this issue may be due to poor traces or soldering from the factory, in which case a bios update won't necessarily help either.

No, there would be a seamless handoff to the battery if the P.S. was dodgy. I'm more inclined to go with a trace or solder to the Hard Drive connector. I saw someone else with this issue that would actually jiggle the hard drive and get better success booting up.

mainboard is starting to fail. common problem on this model. the southbridge is starting to lose contact with the mainboard and that can cause ide failures, keyboard and touchpad failures as well.

I just shut off computer, enter bios , make sure it there then reboot and its ok, but yes i will check into solder joints problem. Any suggestions on what to look for?

How much for a replacement board and where to purchase. Im from canadaif incase you are but will get one wherever i can.

Check on ebay, but be aware that a mainboard swap is not a walk in the park for someone with no previous experience. Also be aware that there's no guarantee that the board you'd be getting would not also have that issue unless it was specifically mentioned.

With Acer's track record of poor customer service, you probably won't get any relief that way, but it wouldn't hurt to begin a correspondence with them, since as MichelleG states, this is a known issue to them as well.

looking at anywhere from $200 to over $400.

just google the part number.

MB.ABE02.001 - this is for PATA drives

MB.ABK02.001 - this is for SATA drives

try a firmware update... firmware is the "bios" (kinda) on the cd rom. just go the acers website and it should have a download for the cd rom firmware update...

acer (U.S.) does not offer firmware updates for optical drives.
