To What Extent Can I upgrade my Dell Latitude C840?

Hey, I've got a Dell Latitude C840. We bought it in 2003. I'm finding it's really not fast enough for what I want to do with it (Video edit, game a little, photo editing).

Here's what it has: Mobile Intel Pentium 4 – M CPU 2.00GHz 1.99GHz, 512 MB of RAM

NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go (I think with 64 mb graphics ram, i'm not sure)

Usb port (I don't know whether it's 1 or slower than 1

60 GB Hard Drive.

I take alot of photos, (I might become a photographer) I have about 19 gb of them. I'm also into Video, so I'm trying to do some editing (not working, way too slow).

My problems: My hard drive is full, I definitely need a bigger hard drive.
The usb port is extremely slow, my desktop computer (bought at same time as this laptop) doesn't even have usb 2.0 and it's twice as fast. Video editing is very slow (CPU problem or RAM problem??) Games don't run very fast at all, and i'm talking about older games like battlefield 1942.

So basically, I'd like to know, what is the maximum that I can upgrade everything, CPU, GPU, USB, Hard Drive, anything.

And/or, tell me if it's even worth it (How much would it roughly cost), and would it even be that fast once I upgraded it, or if I should just get a new laptop

Thanks so much, AJ

There is no upgrade available for the C840 that's going to do what you're needing it to do. The fastest CPU these systems will take is 2.2Ghz and the most amount of RAM would be 1GB. As for the hard drive I think the C840/i8200 does not have the LBA update for hard drives bigger than 137GB. So 120 is about as high as you can go. You're better off saving your money for a new Laptop.

I think an upgrade to a bigger faster hdd, maxing out ur memory and a fresh reformat & install of the OS will do wonders for your machine.

Also, check your fans and clean them out, I bet those are clogged and slowing down ur cpu. But with a fresh install, more ram, faster hdd and a better running cpu will be light night and day. There's no reason why that computer should feel dog slow in Windows unless you have a lot of crap taking up cycles and ur cpu overheating.

I have a C840 which currently has 1280MB of RAM (1x1gb chip and 1x256mb) I took the chips from an Inspiron 700m which was being upgraded. They are PC2700 chips. I am pretty sure that the C840 motherbaod will go up to 2GB even tho the literature says 1GB. Mine is living proof it can go above 1GB anway. I have another 512MB chip which I am replacing the 256MB one with tommorow and I fully expect to see 1.5GB opf RAM I wanted to include a piccie from WinMSD but can't see a way to just add an attachement ...
