hmm it seems that no matter what i still cant get this thing to work for those that got it working.. were yall using the 64 bit version or the 32 bit version of ubuntu? can i install a 32 bit ubuntu on a 64 bit processor like the core 2 duo t7400?

Wow I just installed the 32 bit feisty and i8k works!! thanks for your help guys. once I installed the 32 bit version everything yall said worked perfectly. Now a little help would be great on using it would be nice plz. I'm trying to figure out where does the temp for the gpu show. i seem to be only seeing the cpu temp and the fan speed numbers are really jumbled.

okay I figured out how to increase the width so now it's not jumbled again but the fan speeds are way off :s

hey can somebody help me use the i8k plugin for gkrellm? i got it to work (i'm using the 32 bit ubuntu now so everything installed fine) I'm trying to fiddle with the settings but I dont seem to think it's actually controlling the gpu fan properly at all. Using nvclock, it reports my gpu is idling near 70 degrees C which means my gpu fan must be set wrong. In windows it idles at 52 degrees C

FYI you can check the gpu temperature within gkrellm. Also, note that in Linux, nvidia has not implemented powermizer and your gpu is using its 3d settings. In windows it uses significantly lower current and voltage with the 2d clocks. Also, any load you put on the gpu, say you are using beryl, increases temps. Regardless though, my gpu was only about 5-8 degrees hotter in Linux idling with beryl. The gpu fan isn't even that efficient on the Dell's imo so I do not know why even changing the fan from low to (worst case) off could effect the temperature that much. Note all my experiences are based off of the 6800 series.

well i just realised that the "right fan" setting is actually for the cpu fan and the "left fan" setting is the the gpu fan but i seem to only have these dynamically change according to the cpu temp and not the gpu temp. how do you set the gpu fan to adjust itself to the gpu temp? I cant even figure out how to vew the gpu temp in gkrellm. Also i'm in a pretty hot country so from fans off to low to high make a HUGE temp difference.

To see the gpu temperature you need to go to configuration > builtins > sensors and open the temperatures panel.

You are right that i8k does not support gpu temperature apparently which is a bummer. I would just like to be able to control the right (urr left in i8k however) fan based on gpu temperature. Doesnt seem like that will ever get done unless I do it myself but I'm not sure how much patching/skill it will take.

Edit: Here is an old thread regarding the topic but it provides no information

Also note my earlier post I could not get the fans to work correctly in Deg C so changed over into deg F and the fans seemed to run fine. Not sure why but in deg F it was all OK

Awesome thank you didn't think about this but so happy I found it.
