TrueLife...how much better?

Thread Starter
Hi,

My Inspiron is heading back for a refund...and I will probably re-order but with TrueLife. I am reading on thisa forum that the WXGA displays are rubbish, poor lioght leakage, washed out colours, poor viewing angles. Having seen a non "TrueLife" display, I will definitely re-order with TrueLife, but what sort of difference can I expect...or is it just a "glossy" version of the stock LC panel (I believe mine is an LG panel).

Thanks

Indy

go for the True life wxga+ screen. (cheeper then the wuxga, but still awesome). i replaced my matte (LG-Philip) to this lovley True life screen. the LG-Philip was not bad att all, i got this True life for free of Dells support, so i just said thanks. here is a picture on the screen.

Trulife improves contrast and is generally nicer to look at it, but under lots of light, it can have some nasty glare. A trade-off but if your not working outside in the sun all the time, definitely worth it.

Some people love the glossy look and some prefer the matt look. The glossy look has worse glare as noted above but I prefer the WUXGA version as I like to have a couple of pages displayed on the screen which makes it easier for me to work on.

Its really just a personal preference me I like the WUXGA screen & run the res at 1900x1200 all day for word, excel etc etc. As far as light leakage is concerned some have it worse than others I have a bit on the bottom and a slight stripe down the middle which I only notice on occasionally.

M90 semi-gloss LCD >>> M1710's TrueLife. BTW, I'm not a big fan of glare and dust.

I think Dells screen vary an awful lot. I've had more bad ones than good ones. Its just pot luck if you get one you'll be happy with IMO. Of the truelife screens I've had, the M1710 I returned because the viewing angles were inconsistent on one side of the screen. Reaslly off putting. A 640m I had had dreadful viewing angles, sold that. Both 9400's I've had were ok, bit of leakage but otherswise ok. Both 9400 and M1710 were all the WUXGA screen. Like Philby I like the larger screen for working.

Yep trulife tends to get dusty but so do iPods or PS3s and they are still cool, the main problem is glare my leakage is pretty small but i agree on the fact that it's kind of a lottery i got a sec5557, and i love it, i'm a sucker for samsung displays, plasma or lcd i like the image quality a lot.

Edit:
Also the WUXGA being of a higher native resolution requires more GPU horsepower to give decent framerates so you'll be constantly ocing it.

Ztinger, that was the worst analogy ever. Sure, everything gets dusty, but the TrueLife LCDs attract a lot more dust than most things. They should use it as a vaccum clearner. Ooohh, the first silenced vaccuum cleaner...

I know, but my point was to make notice of the fact that even tougth it tends to get real dusty and by real i mean real dusty, a whole lot than my plasma hdtv, that's pretty much the only thing wrong with it since it's very good on the way image look, depending on the panel u get.

If you are working under direct sunlight the truelife is 10x better. The matte screen will diffuse the sunight & you can't see the screen at all because everything is washed out (I work in the field a lot). I had an older inspiron with the matte screen & was hating it when I was in the sun trying to program or troubleshoot equipment. The truelife screen will have the colors washed out but you can see the images/text clearly. I got that option on my 1405 & never regretted it. There is a glare, but that can be avoided by simply tilting the LCD a little bit. After I went to a TL screen I swore I would never go back. I cannot say I noticed any difference in dust collection between my semi & TL display. I think it may just be the dust is more noticable on the TL screen. as for higher res & the need to constantly OC. -you can always drop the res in a game. The image quality difference will not be that noticable at all. When I am on the road though I play all my games @ 1920x1200 & don't have an issue with framerates.
