[Vista] Complete PC Backup Really Does Work!!!

Here's how I got this to work:

1. Turned on System Restore (I had this disabled)
2. Created a Restore Point
3. Re-booted my Notebook
4. Went to Complete PC Backup & Restore (No more error messeage)
5. Plugged-in my External USB 2.0 Hard Drive
6. Backup offered DVD or E: External Drive (I chose the E:
7. It backed-up to my External
8. Re-booted using Vista Ultimate's DVD & Chose "Repair"
9. Found my External, clicked on repair
10.It worked ,took about 15 Minutes to Restore my Notebook

After the Complete PC Restore it Rebooted and it was done!!
This Really does work in Vista Ultimate!!! but you MUST have the SYSTEM
RESTORE ENABLED, and HAVE AT LEAST A ONE RESTORE POINT CREATED
(if NOT this
feature will not work) and you will always get this Error messeage (0x8008005)
these features are suppose to be on for a reason, and when you disabled
them, things WON'T work correctly, If something is turned on by Default in Vista, LEAVE IT ALONE, unless you don't plain on using it, I Hope this helps others?

yep, Vista's System Restore (as well as Previous Versions and Complete Backup) all rely on Volume Shadow Copy service, components of which get disabled when you disable those individual functions. didnt ever recognize that as your problem, because ive never tried to run it with System Restore disabled (I dont even use Completete backup on my desktop, way too much information to back up to DVDs, usually tells me at least 30 DVDs are required ), nor did you ever state you had it disabled for me to pick up on

glad you got it working

Yikes........30 DVD's have you considered backing up to a External USB Drive, a lot easier that way, it uses up almost half the external drive tho (No Compression) I used a spare Notebook USB 2.0 120GB 5400 RPM Caddy for this, yeah I didn't even think of that, untill I tried it out, I didn't want to copy all of the Restore points, as they are a pain and take up a lotta room, if you don't delete them (I was using Norton Ghost 2003 so didn't think it was needed) and yep that's what the problem was..........

well i got 2 mostly full 160GB drives in my desktop, and only 1 160GB external, so that doesnt quite work

its a dual boot system tho, and the XP is way screwed up so i wouldnt care if it went out and I had to reinstall it... in fact id welcome it

*knocks on wood because he still doesnt want to deal with replacing a hard drive right now >_> *

anyway i just keep the data I need on that machine backed up, theres a lot of fluff on there so a full backup would be wasting space

more use to me on my notebook but ive got nothing on there right now so no need to do a complete backup on it at the moment

WOW that's a lotta data you got there , My XP is messed up too, but it's on a Norton Ghost DVD image , something went very Wrong when I updated to the Gateway VISTA BIOS, that was a BIG Mistake, that I cannot fix
However, Vista works Great, XP is toast, even a clean install wouldn't fix XP, and I'm really at a loss as to how to Fix XP?
I don't think I'll ever find the orginal XP BIOS, now that may Fix this problem w/ XP.............dunno?
