Lyte, I just want to commend you on the guide you put together. Great job! I hope I will be able to use it next week when my 8790-S comes in

Thanks for the info

Just got my 8790 a couple of days ago and let me just say that thanks to your post i was able to get things going good. i got it without an os so the pictures and step by step directions were easy to follow. This notebook is worth every penny, i just finished mounting a rack in my 2003 accord, for my 8790, to hook up with the three screens i have in and you should see peoples mouths drop when they see me rollin around at night with the 17inch screen lighting my interior.

3) Anyone else experiencing a "Detecting Hard Drives" message during boot (has a rotating cursor underneath and lasts for about 35-45 seconds before hard drive is found)? This occured after I set the RAID dip switches to "OFF."
I used a Toshiba PA3109U-FDD

1) I set both switches to on
2) I copied everything below the FASTTRAK folder to the root of the floppy (not the DEVICE folder referenced in the manual (using PDF version))
3) I disbaled the USB Device 29 setting.
4) Made sure I had floppy plugged in a back lower USB port before booting.
5) Pressed Ctrl-F to go into array setup and chose auto then stripe
6) Put in winxppro cd and booted it then pressed F6 so I could use drivers from my floppy

I didn't experience your delay, but then again I got this thing bareboned, put in the HDs myself and set the DIP switches to on for initial setup with raid stripe.

so far I am installing windows now and everything is going smooth as sandpaper
post #28 of 49
OK, after all is said and done, dammit ... windows is on h: ... so I corrected 3 and 4 to make sure I plugged it in the back and disabled USB 123 as G-Ohmaha said

Er... uhmm.. eh?

boy i'm lost. I still can't figure out 2 important things. Do I install the OS before or after setting up RAID? (I've scoured the internet, and since everyone assumes that you'd just KNOW the answer it's never mentioned anywhere). AND, during the first 'conditioning' of the battery can I use the laptop while it charges up? Or do I have to not use it for the 'fast' charge that I keep seeing mentioned (Although I also don't know how to fast/slow charge the battery.. do I yell at it? I've been trying that but it doesn't seem to work very well)

so if i ordered my 8790 without OS installed, and 1 HD, I still have to disable raid?? :S sounds wierd cause why would it be activated in the first place if only 1 hard drive was installed. anyone know?
Well mine was disabled when I got it, so most LIKELY it will come disabled if you didn't opt for raid.

8790 Sager same as Cyberpower x7-8000?

I've posted a few times before and fell in love immediately when I saw the sager 8790. I was wondering if the cyberpower x7-8000 is the same machine. Can someone who owns a 8790 go to cyberpower's website and check it out.

It looks very very similiar.

Here are some tips for installing W2k Pro on your 8790, should you choose to do so:
1) You'll need an external USB floppy drive
2) Copy the contents of :\DRIVERS\RAID\DRIVERS\ULTRA from the Utilities CD to a floppy (the easiest way is with another computer)
3) Make sure you have USB Device 29 Disabled in the BIOS, but Legacy USB Enabled
4) Hit the F6 key when W2k install asks to install SCSI or Raid Drivers
5) Load the floppy you made in step 2 and select "Win2000 Promise FastTrak100 Controller"

You need to install these drivers for the Promise ATA controller regardless if you are running a raid setup or not.

My 8790 arrived yesterday

I was so happy to receive my loaded 8790S. BUT - unfortunately the intenal wi-fi kept disconnecting after 3 or 4 minutes. (I have a linksys wireless router) This never happened with my previous notebook - a Toshiba P-25 S609. I talked to 2 tech support guys and neither one could figure out what the problem was. Also the rear USB ports were installed upside down. Not a biggie but disconcerting when you have to remember to flip the connection over when connecting a USB device. (The side USB port was installed correctly. The palm rest DOES get quite warm which I was aware of but didn't realize that it was annoying compared to my Toshiba.) I will say that I was really impressed with the screen, (better than the Toshiba) the keypad and the speed of the computer. But unfortunately, the quality and feel of the notebook wasn't up there with Toshiba or Sony. The screen lid was kind of flimsy and I wish there was a USB port on the right side to hook a mouse up to. The speakers were - well... mediocre standard laptop speakers. I am returning it for a refund. I think a $3500 notebook should feel and operate like a $3500 notebook. Anyone have these same problems?

Sounds like you did ZERO research before you bought the product. There is a review section that provides a wealth of information about the 8790 (both good and bad). Looks like you need to return the unit, get your money back, and buy another Toshiba. Recommend that you buy a unit that you can actually see and play with before you purchase or you may, once again, be a dissatisified customer. Good luck.

- Then download these drivers: http://www.sagernotebook.com/ftp/misc/gn-wiag.exe - Adam@PCTorque
Okay, so you download the drivers....then what? When it asks for a directory to install them to, does it matter where?
There should be detailed instructions on how to install the drivers in the manual if it's anything like the one for the 4750. Usually you can just extract the files then find the setup file within the driver folder, click on it and follow the directions.
