Sound problem/distortion on Toshiba Satellite M100

Hello. I've had this laptop for over a year and the sound has generally been fine but just recently I've noticed out of the blue that on all music, whether it's through itunes, winamp, even web streams or youtube videos, there is an audio distortion that creates this high pitched element to all music and also adds crackling and just sounds extremely awful. I would blame it on the speakers but the thing is its present through the headphone jack as well. Does anyone have any tips on what could be wrong or what I should do about this? I don't want to get it serviced if it's a software thing. If it's hardware then I'm clueless but I do have an extended warranty.

Similar problems on I believe the A105 models were cleared up by a BIOS update at Toshiba.com

Well I updated the BIOS and everything appeared to go smoothly, but on the reboot my sound card had disappeared! After several unsuccessful attempts to install drivers and run the add new hardware wizard I finally got it to show up. I've managed to get sound working in Winamp and iTunes now, but I have no audio for flash files through either Firefox or IE. Argh! At least the sound I'm getting through my applications now is good again, no distortion.

Hi deaddy, im having the same problems but the headphones work fine, ive also had my m100 for over a year now and im thinking the speakers may be the busted already, may i know what kind of bios update you did? links would be much appreciated. thanks!
