The Hitachi 7K400 400GB HDD is listed as an ATA/133 hard disk drive, and it works just fine in the Acer Aspire 1710. Besides, ATA/133 is backwards compatible just like all previous ATA iterations.

In any case, ATA/133 is not the reason that you might be having problems with the Maxtor hard disk drive.

Ok, so what's the problem ? If ATA/133 is @llright ?
Only that 16MB buffer must be giving the MOBO hard time nothing else .
Man , i try everything to make work
I'm not that stupid ,,,,, as external works with no problem.
The moment what i plug in was not recognize in BIOS & that's was it .
I plug in at least five times that Maxtor because i must put my WD back to lappy & formated as external .
Win XP was not workin , recovery disks , nothing, that Maxtor was unknown disk

Anyway , i still got questinon for ya , what timings on RAM sticks you got ?

And the 400 Gb module here
I'm ok with 30 GB for system & 90 GB for storage so 120 Gb is enough , but when i saw that 300GB ATA/133 with 16MB buffer & it was irresistible for that $.
Too bad was not working together with BIOS & MOBO
I just gonna keep for some others good deals

IF that ATA/133 works , i gonna pick next time 120-160GB with 8 MB buffer & try again

I prefer smaller HDD then giant , they faster & you not gonna loose that much if they give up , because you allways gonna have back up on others externals HDD's

Here is my HDD benchmark

Hm

Intel Chipset INF 6.0.1.1002
Intel Application Accelerator 4.0

Seems that i need it to get that HDD recognized
& is not gonna work with our MOBO & current BIOS.
& we can not fit that Ultra ATA/133 PCI Adapter Card , or instal drivers which might help recognize .
So nothing for us

Or

Too late anyway , i got that HDD no more
But cool HDD though.

I am using a Dial-Up Internet Connection.

THanks,
OK - I give up!

One final thought; if you are using the dial-up on one PC is it connected directly to the phone line or through the router. It seems to me that perhaps what you should do is set up your network as if it was all hard wired through the modem-linked PC and then use the wireless router behind the PC with, in due course, the other PCs linked to the router (wired or wireless) and then to the PC that is linked to the modem; i.e. use the router lke a hub. I presume that you can connect the single PC to the internet by dial-up. if that works move on from there without disturbing that connection, but treating the modem as a shared resource.

If that doesn't work, all that I can suggest now is that you e-mail Linksys support. I had an issue with wireless cards which they resolved within 24 hours - very helpful.

Sorry I can't offer any other suggestions.

No problem. I hope you get your hard disk issue sorted out. There is no reason that the Aspire 1710 should not be accepting the Maxtor 300GB HDD. Maybe someone else out there has bought that drive and installed it and can be of assistance. Most people here have installed Seagate, Hitachi, or Western Digital hard disk drives with no problems.

VIDEO BD.BRIDGE.INTEL865G VG.A1509.005

You would need to order this part most likely since this would contain your attachment for the LCD cable. This is also the board that probably ships on the Aspire 1710 models that did not ship with a GeForce FX Go add-on video card.

Very usefull. thank you very much.

One more question if you don't mind. Where can I get a service manual???

Send me an e-mail, and I will provide a personal FTP link to the Acer Aspire 1710 Service Guide.

hello boys, i've just finished the upgrading from the rubbish intel integrated graphics to the fx5700 128Mb. It runs like a dream. For the integrated solution there is indeed a daughterboard that the lcd cable plugs in to. I took pics of the whole process which i shall post shortly

Wow no kidding on the 400GB. I've been watching Ebay for that and the
best you can do is about $250 + shipping.

I vaguely remember somewhere early in this thread that someone tried
a ATA 133 drive and had weird problems and could not get it to work.
Might be interesting to find out if that drive was a Maxtor.

Note not all manufacturers adhere rigidly to any specification.

It was a Maxtor drive that a previously user had trouble with. However, it can't be based simply on the ATA/133 issue because the Hitachi 400GB is ATA/133 and it works flawlessly in my Aspire 1710. Also, that would really make no sense anyway since all ATA drives are automatically backwards compatible.

ATA133 HDD problems

Haven't posted anything for a while - My 1714 notebook was stolen just before Christmas, so there's been little point (Idiots took the notebook but 1. I don't keep the battery in the notebook. 2. They left the power supply behind. Also they took my Archos AV480 - I hope they get gonorrhea!). More annoyed about all the information which was lost than the hardware.
Umm, this forum's grown quite a lot... I may print this whole thing off and bind it, as it's more useful than either the normal manual or the service manual for the 1710 - or acer support for that matter!

With regards to the HDD problem someone had, The laptop which was stolen had been upgraded with a Maxtor Diamond Plus 9 ATA133 HDD, which worked perfectly fine (aside from a very high temperature). Had had in there since June, when I got the laptop. Worked with the bios the laptop came with which was Ver. 3A17. There's no reason why it should not be working.
Going to leave the stock 120Gb in - may actually encourage me to backup once in a while.

Word of warning - prior to that I ordered a laptop from www.shopacer.co.uk (CETUK) and although the outside box was a 1714 box, the laptop was a 1711 which had been upgraded. I only noticed because the first part of the serial number was the part number for the 1711 instead of the 1714, and also the processor was the wrong one. Had to threaten to take them to court before I got my refund which took 3 weeks.

For those of you who are still looking for one (despite them being discontinued in the UK) I managed to find what I think may be the last one in stock from www.a2zcomputers.co.uk. Unsure whether they still have any left - it was advertised on their website, I had to call them up.
Quite happy with the replacement laptop, as this one happens to have no dead pixels.

Finally, just before I found www.A2Zcomputers.co.uk, I spoke to www.technoworld.co.uk who were the suppliers of my first 1714 last June. End of January they are having their last delivery of 1710 series laptops. If you place an order with them for this, it is non-refundable unless they can't get the laptop in, and I believe when I called there was a shortlist of about 5 people.

Fionally - Rachel Faith (or anyone else) did anyone try putting 2 x 2Gb RAM modules in this laptop? As mentioned before when my gf tried it, it blew up a few things, but chances are this had nothing to do with the RAM, more probably a short somewhere.
The only reliable 2GB x 2 memory sticks out there are registered modules which are not supported in any size in the Aspire 1710. This was tested by a previous user. Of course, registered memory would be slower anyways.

Unless I have missed it, there are no PC2700/PC3200 2GB unbuffered modules.

Hey guys

I'm not sure what happend with that Maxtor 300GB ATA/133 16MB buffer HDD.
But does not work with my lappy. But you still can try it your self & let me know
The ATA/133 still might work with 8MB , i just havent try it jet.
Just if you thinking about new HDD , skip SATA whitch can't be plug to MOBO & that with 16MB buffer whitch is not recognized by BIOS.(or chipset, or whatever)

Hey, where the hell is my GeForce Go 6800 AGP 8x ! Just kidding ,,,,,,,,,,,,,we stock on dead spot tough

I just start envy that PCI-express 16x mobile GPU's

Enjoy your lappy

Aspire 1711 smi LCD & heat? problems

Hi there,

my problem child is a 1711 smi (P4 2,8 & Gforce 5700 64 mb). The first problem came after just 9 weeks of use. As discriped before the LCD screen began flickering and went dim on the top site after that. The screen also had several hundreds dead pixels on the outer left site. wich i only discovered later (i now, should have checked it the first day). I called the supportdesk and they told me it was the backlight, that had gone dead. Sent it away and 10 days later i received my baby back. They had changed the screen, the lcd convertor and upgraded the Bios. But within 2 months the same problem! First a dim screen (now on the lower part of the screen), the strange high sound and the next day nightview with a lot of flickering.
Called supportdesk again and because it was the second failure in just 2 months they arranged a carrier to pick it up and they would place me on the top of the repair list. 3 ****in' weeks later i got my machine back from Germany (i live in the Netherlands) with only the note that they had changed parts and upgraded the Bios again.

Ok, besides the fact that i don't trust my own computer no longer i think that the fan(s) are operating at higher speed (and a lot of noise) then within the first month. It's becoming very annoying. I've downloaded Mobilemeter to check the temperatures. Here are some rusults with the fan speeds:
-Fan speed 1 (normal? acceptable noise) till 1 minute, CPU 43°C and GPU 22°C
-Fan speed 2 (Noisy but still no problem) after 1 minute, CPU 45/46°C
-Fan speed 3 (more noise, begins to annoy me) after 5 minutes, CPU 51°C
-Fan speed 4 (Noise like a hairdryer on the 1st level) after 13 minutes, CPU 56C.
After that the temperatures climb to 62°C CPU and 53°C GPU and then stay steady. But that's in normal use, so the question is; Are this normal temperatures? And what about the fan speeds? There are 2 more higher speeds i know of. Speed 5 after 65°C CPU and speed 6 during boot up.
Is it possible that Acer changed something in the new Bios that will make the fan starts on lower temperatures? (Monday i will contact Acer support about it). And the last question; how do i now if my CPU is a Prescott or a Northwood?

Hey, i feel a lot better now.

Friends,

I don't know, if it is of interest and if it already had been posted before. (PMI, if so!)
But ACER has released a new Bios (3A25) a couple of weeks ago, which can be grabbed here ! No ideas about the changes or improvements though. I already have installed it (no problems on that). Unfortunately still not more options open ... However, it may help in some of the ongoing discussions ...
