Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 53

Hmmz, that's the version Acer installed on my notebook. Is it wise to flash an older Bios version?

Just found out that the temperature of the CPU dropped 5°C after i disconnected the powersupply. (now i need a battery with 12 hrs capacity )

Hey Bazzio

What CPU , RAM, MOBO , BIOS , Cache you got , easy to find using CPU-Z utility
Temp on CPU after few h using 36-42C
Temp on HDD 40-55C ,,,,, after few gigs file transfer up to 61C
Temp on GPU 45-50C ,,,,, after heavy gaming up to 75C

& i did notice only 3 fan speeds tough

But ACER has released a new Bios (3A25) a couple of weeks ago, which can be grabbed here ! No ideas about the changes or improvements though. I already have installed it (no problems on that). Unfortunately still not more options open ... However, it may help in some of the ongoing discussions ...

S.
Thanx for the BIOS , my problem with total physical memory was fixt
Now i got total 1,024.00 MB , before shows just 512 !
Available physical memory was more than total physical memory .

Problem fixt
I was looking for new BIOS about 2 weeks ago & nada . & is still not yet on Acer's web support

Thanx Flight_guy747 , appreciate ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

What really concerns me is that i have the "cooler" Northwood processor, so where are these high temperatures coming from???

Ok, no problem
I realy got no idea about that heat

My RAM run just 160MHz , still got no idea why .
& i got my temp after i try some benchmarks as Sandra 2005 & PC wizard 04.
Temp on HDD goes up to 63C with HDD benchmark .
Update time on mobile meter was default 6.0 sec

The 160Mhz is indeed strange.

Took a look at the pic of your temperatures. Beside the fact that your temperatures are way lower, the time it takes to go back to normal is much more faster then mine. It will take about 30 minutes to come back to my normal temperatures. It's gonna be long phonecall next monday with supportdesk (0,20 € p/m).

I know , but i got 160 MHz all the time.
I will buy DDR400 soon , i just have not yet decided if i gonna buy 1GB stick soon & posible get other same stick later & get 2GB ram ,,,,, or get 1GB dual kit soon & never buy 2GB RAM because of waste $$$

My first PC got 128MB , upgrade to 256MB , after 512 MB, 768MB & end up on 1024MB PC133 RAM .( i was using 2 RAM slot MOBO )
What a $$$ waste on so many RAM stick's , nobody & nowhere to use them anymore
Anyway , i don't see any diference between 768 & 1024 MB.
So thats my dilemma now

The new BIOS fix that total physical memory bug .
I know , it cools right away , all the time , with oldest bios same as with new ,,that mobile meter was on for 20 to 30 min ( just to get the idea )

Support calls are too expensive , i newer call , just for parts price & that was free ( but it took 45 min my day cell time )

I have had the 3A25 latest BIOS installed as well with no problems. I had forgot to post about it in late December. For the latest BIOS releases, it is always better to check the support site for Asia (Taiwan) since they update the quickest. For possible driver or application updates, it is best to stay with the Acer North America (PanAm) support site.

Instaling that bios was no problem.
& it fix my old time problem http://notebookforums.com/showpost.p...&postcount=818

Now that is strange imdeed:

I have the 1714 and running the CPU-Z utility I also have 160MHz Ram Speed.

To be more accurate, the speed is 159.6 MHz

Has anyone else tried the above utility?

My results (for memory) are:

General:
TYPE: DDRAM-SDRAM CHANNELS # : DUAL
SIZE: 1024MB PERFORMANCE MODE : DISABLED (what ??)

Timings:
FREQUENCY: 159.6 MHz (???????)
FSBRAM : 5:4
CAS LATENCY# : 2.5 CLOCKS
RAS# TO CAS# DELAY : 3 CLOCKS
RAS# PRECHARGE : 3 CLOCKS
CYCLE TIME ( Tras) : 7 CLOCKS

Why the ram speed is that low?
And what is this Performance mode that is disabled?

Also I have the 3A20 Bios version.
Is it necessary to update to 3A25, if the only thing that is fixed is the little System information bug? Or it does more than that?

Hmmz, strange... i've got only one 512 mb card and performence mode is enabled. Maybe it's because you've got 2 banks filled???? are the 2 memorycards the same brand and type?

The last question and then i will stop bugging you. ;

Could anyone test the CPU temperatures operating on battery for me? I'm curious if others also got the same temp. drop of about 10°C after unplugging the powersupply.
My definatly did not drop that much. It just dropped about 2C and stayed there. I think it matters on what setting you put your computer on in the power options (mine was set on home/office desk).
the memory sticks are exactly the same brand.

As for the bios update, is it necessary? I have the 3A20 version.

Yeah

It just sometimes happend that my CPU is running @ 3000.3 GHz ( FSB 200.0 MHz , Bus speed 800.0 MHz ) not just 2992.5 GHz or so ( FSB 199.5 MHz , Bus speed 798.0 MHz ).
So my RAM running @ 160 MHz on full & 159.6 MHz on the slower .
& why is performance mode disabled got no idea , i haven't figure it out how to enable .
About BIOS , too me newer is better then older , unless .
I know it fix that bug , it might helpet something else too , but i haven't find out yet

That should not make any difference (and it doesn't, drops like rock with the same amount), i think. Other options only changes the times. But thanks anyway Could it be the poweradapter, too much current?

This is the only comment i could find;

Fix memory size become half only in Widows system information issue.

Backing up right now

Had a talk with the supportdesk this afternoon. They also think there's something wrong and my noisy beast is going for repair for the 3th time.
They will let it pick up tomorrow. I hope it's gonna last way shorter then last time. i'll keep you updated.

I am asking that because of this:

I have all the time my 1714smi turned on because of adsl connection. And when I say all the time, I mean 24 hours a day for the last 4 months. No problems in any way. The system is rock-stable and everything works fine.

But since I read about the LCD problems, I concetrated for strange sounds that I might hear from the LCD. And I noticed the following:

When the monitor is off and then I turn it on, I can hear a very small hissing sound somewhere near the area where the power cable plugs in. Its so small that you have to put your ear near that area to notice it. If I prees Fn-F6 to turn the backlight off, the sound disappears and when I turn it on, I can hear it again.

I would like to ask every person that has the 1714smi to check it out and tell me if you hear the same sound or it's a symptom that tells me that the AC-DC inverter is going to fry. Also the people that had their LCD or inverter replaced, do you hear now this sound when the backlight is on?
I just got mine back from the techies and there is no sound that is louder than the fan when I get up close and personal. I was happy to have mine go out at a time when I could live without it (over Christmas break), and it's back as good as new.

I also run mine continuously for the same reason and have had no problems letting this baby do the energizer bunny thing. It's great...

Good luck...

Well, I don't hear this small hissing sound so often the last 2 weeks. It happens once per 3-4 days and for 2 to 3 minutes. It's something with the fan that is near the power cable. I am almost sure about it. Probably dust or something else that got into it probably. I will open it tomorrow to clean it from dust. Any suggestions?
