Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 55

35 min for 40GBs. It's the USB2.

I have external Western digital 200GB. 50GBs of data from the internal HDD to the external took me 40-45 minutes ( I don't remember exactly).

I checked about the USB2 speed and it should be 480mbps

But i newer check CPU temp , well nex time
On HDD i reach 65ºC so far after i back up my HDD ,,,, about 40 GB pic & software ,,,,,, it took about 35 min by slowass USB2
Or maybe that USB2 is ok, but that original Seagate HDD & my external enclosure are not good combo

BTW it was running cooler then now like week ago , but i have not yet figure out what it's cause.
It's a Northwood P4, 3,4Ghz.
My HDD runs at a constant temp of 52/53ºC, but the processor and the GPU goes to very bad temperatures, like 80 for the CPU and 75 for the GPU that afect my fps.. I also have the GPU O'C.
Any sugestion?

My temperatures with my 1714 are:

CPU: MIN: 39 MAX: 69
GPU: MIN: 40 MAX: 82 ( Only with Deus Ex 2, with any other games max 78 )
HDD: MIN: 40 MAX: 62

75 degrees for the GPU while playing a new game is ok, but 80 degrees for the CPU is bad.

I run some very demanding programs that stress the CPU to 100% usage for up to 40 minutes. It never goes more than 69 degrees. It goes to 70 just for a second, then the fan speeds up and then remains to 69.

Maybe the CPU fan doesn't make good contact with the CPU

I took the fan out today, to clean it, and reatached it carefully so that it would be well placed.
Runned my stress game (AAO) and the results are the same:
CPU:79ºC
GPU:73ºC
HDD:54ºC

The fan is working fine, but i can't understant why the CPU gets so hot... I even bought a termaltake coolpad, but there is no major improvements...

I haven't tested that game, but from Mobilemeter you can see that the speed of the processor will slow down if the temperature reaches 92 degrees and shut down if it goes to 93. So, with 79 degrees in CPU you shouldn't have fps slowdown.

Also, my max temp was 69, but we have to consider also other factors. One of them is that my house doesn't have heating. My room temperature right now is 18 degrees, which is quite cool and helps the laptop to have low temps. If the environment temperature was higher, I would expect increased temperature in the CPU.

At the end, if your CPU doesn't exceed 80 degrees, you don't have to worry. Remember that the limit is 92 degrees for slowdown.

I'm afraid that that is not quite true.
My room is also at 19/20ºC so it's a perfect natural temperature.
Other thing is that in this game, running it in window mode and monitoring Mobile Meter at the same time, it's notorious that the fps vary because of the temperature.
When i start the game i have a temp of 68ºC and my fps vary from 40-20. After playing 20/25 minutes, the temperatures raises to those damn 79/80ºC and my fps lower to 7-15!!! In the time between these two peacks, the fps are lowering... :\

Western Digital 250G = increased vibration...

I replaced the stock 120G hard drive on my Acer Aspire 1712 with a Western Digital 250G (WD2500JB) last night. Everything is great except, there is now a noticable vibration in the system. Not bad at all, but more than was there before.

I took the cover off and powered up the system. By touch, I don't feel any excess vibration anywhere. I powered up the old hard drive (out of the system) to compare. I don't see any difference. But that is a highly subjective measurement. I adjusted the tightness of the mounting screws (the ones that mount the drive to the carrier with the blue cushions) and that seemed to help a little (very little).

So, a question to those that have upgraded the hard drive in their system.

Have any of you noticed an increase in system vibration? Is this just the result of installing the larger hard drive? As in "Live with it"?

Thanks,

No noticeable change in system vibration here after upgrading the hard disk drive to the Hitachi DeskStar 400GB.

As long as you make sure that the drive is in the bracket tightly and then placed in the system and screwed in tightly, you should have no problems.

I am experiencing a strange thing with my 1714 the last week when I play movie files. The movie plays just fine and at random times ( it never exceeds 5 minutes) it freezes just for some miliseconds. This happens up to 20 times for a 2 hour movie and it is very annoying.
I haven't changed anything in any configuration, I double checked for viruses and spyware. Nothing. And it is not a hard disk issue. I have external 200GB Westen Digital and it doesn't matter if I play the movie from the internal or the external hard drive. The same thing happens.
The only thing that I have done the last week is updating my bios from 3A20 to 3A25.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
I noticed my WD is a little bit noisy then Seagate , but less then 60 Gb Maxtor 5400 rpm which i put in just for ship to service.

Seems like the new BIOS got some bugs

I use now stock everything , i reflash to old BIOS ( 3A20 ) & my GPU temp is 46-47ºC with criple LCD , so it run cooler 2ºC compare to new 3A25.

From where can I get the old BIOS?

After 8 h

With crippled LCD ,,,,,,,, i hate that high freq. noise & bad picture & stock software on 4 y/o maxtor 60 GB 5400 rpm 2 MB buffer HDD
While web browsing
temp on GPU 46-47ºC
temp on CPU 37-43ºC
temp on HDD 38-41ºC

Sems like that HDD is slower , noisy & cooler then any others
post #1098 of 1526
OK.
I reloaded the old BIOS and tried a few movie files. The freezing disappeared.
That's very interesting. That means that the new BIOS has bugs????
But I will test a few more movie files to be 100% sure.

LCD Inverter faulty in Aspire 1712

Bad news. I recently sent my Aspire 1712 to Acer support and got replaced the LCD inverter. After only two months the screen started flashing and the lower half went darker. This is exactly what happened before going completely dark when I had to replace the inverter. The funny thing is that my laptop is less than 1 yr old!! My guess is that it is a faulty design. Do you know of any Acer policy by which I can interchange my laptop for another Acer model?? I still have warranty on it, but I am afraid I will have to keep replacing the inverter every 4-5 months!!

I would not necessarily say faulty design. This model has been around since the Aspire 1700 series was introduced so if there was a widespread problem, you would have never seen a 1710 model introduced. You also have to remember that people who post in forums and newsgroups usually have problems so it compounds the apperance of problems with any model or product. The huge numbers of people who are happy with a product usually don't show up to say "Everything is perfect."

I have had my Aspire 1710 since last May without a single problem and with numerous upgrades. I am sure there are many others as well. You never know about the problem. It could have possibly been a small batch of machines that shipped with faulty inverter boards, etc.

In any case, good luck with your machine.
