Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 56

I have to correct my previous post. It wasn't the bios fault for the movies little freezing.
It's something with the divx configurations.

As for the LCD famous problem....
Well, a lot of people had the same problem. But not all of the Aspire owners have this problem. I suppose that means that a specific number of machines made in the same perhaps period have somethink faulty.
For richal, who had two times replaced the inverter, I can think of three reasons:

1) Bad luck. The first time that your inverter broke down, they put inside a faulty inverter.
2) Something else inside the laptop burns the inverter.
3) Perhaps your power supply in your home is not stable enough? Maybe a UPS would help. In the factory that I work, we have a generator that gives the power supply and it's not stable at all. Without UPS, the PSUs of the desktops were burning after 4-6 months. After installing some cheap UPS, we didn't have the same problem again.

Also, I would like to ask a question. Perhaps it's nothing, but let's give it a shot:

All of you guys that had the LCD problem, have you enabled or disabled the light detection from the BIOS?

I thankfully dont have the LCD problem <taps on wood> but then again I always turn off my when Im not using it. Maybe that has an effect too.

Hmmz, still waiting for my labtop to return from Acer . In one of my earlier posts, i've told about the difference between cpu temps with powersupply and without. Now you've got me scared a bit, because the powersupply is not send to Acer (no need according to Acer support). But what stands UPS for? Oh and i'm almost curtain that the LCD problem is a heat problem. But what's causing the heat???

UPS is that little box that gives stable power supply to your PC.You connect your PC to this machine, and the machine to your home's or work's power supply. So, nomatter how unstable is the power supply of your home, your PC will get stable 220V. They are not very expensive. In my work, the power supply was playing all the time, from 220V to 190V. We had a lot of problems. PSUs burning, motherboards malfunctioning, hard drives, everything.

From the BIOS the light detection is standard ON.
I have it always disabled.
It is a possibility that the light detection has problem and makes the inverter changing all the time the volts of the backlight. I am only guessing. I could be wrong. But if everyone that has LCD problem has this option enabled, and the guys that didn't have the LCD problem had this option disabled, then we could have find the real cause of the problem. Again this is a very theoritical thought and I could be wrong.

Ok, thanks dude.
I shall turn off the light detection in BIOS when my notebook is returned from Acer.

Will this thing do the job?

Yes. It can help from spikes in the voltage.
But if your power supply has drops, you will need a more complete solution.
The product that you say will help if the voltage rises from 220-230 to 250 lets say.
But if your voltage drops below 220 , which causes the most problems, then you will need a UPS.
Take a look at this link.

Their prices do not exceed 50 Euros and you don't need more than 200 Watts ( our laptops need 180 I think ).

ACER web page

Seems like ACER take our model out
No more ? That's it ? What's next ? TravelMate 8100 got nice X700 128MB GPU but just 15,4" LCD, so Aspire 1800 with X600 64MB GPU in only 17" LCD laptop from Acer on the market ?
Acer is always real quick to introduce and discontinue specific models and configurations. Unfortunately, there is nothing on the market that can match this unique transportable in my opinion in overall design and features. After using the 17" desktop LCD in the Aspire 1710, I have not been able to even catch myself wanting to use another LCD, especially the 17" widescreen LCD's in the newer models. I also would not want to give up that huge desktop hard disk

I also just received my Aspire 1510 series notebook, imported from UK. I was looking for a slightly smaller, yet still powerful machine for everyday use and for travel. Unfortunately, I waited and this model was never offered in the USA. It has a build similar to the 1710 except that it is smaller dimensions obviously with a 15" XGA TFT. Overall, I am very happy with it as well. Acer makes great notebooks.

Also, the TravelMate 8100 does seem like a nice machine if you want a widescreen display that is mobile, yet powerful.

Hmmm......my hard drive has started making a horrible loud noise since yesterday. It's not a grinding noise but the sound of something rotating constantly very loudly.

I might think about chucking a new drive in.

Hell yeah, my baby is back! They changed some parts??? and the CPU cooler, and did some cleaning. Temperatures are now 48 °C at stable, with fan on speed 2. Not as low as it can (or should?) be, but i'm satisfied at the moment.

I wonder what they did to my babe

Changed some parts.

Haha, they changed the lcd convertor and maybe your screen (if so, checkt it for dead pixels!). I think they also upgraded your BIOS again to 3A25.

I have a question about the hardware buttons on the chassis of the 1714SMi. I want to play files that are in a different folder than the default C:\My MP3 folder, is it possible to do so?

I have looked on google, but have found nothing so far, and looked in the registry, and found something, but it doesn't work. I know it's possible to play the music within folders, but when I tried changing the C:\My MP3 folder to a different folder in the registry, it didn't work (all I heard were two clicks)

Any ideas?
TIA

What is that new Bios talk, put a link to features and file...

Logic, I don´t have the program installed but try left drag the folder and click on MOVE HERE, copy or move your mp3 files to the location, then press play, Windows will search the folder and change things for you, this work most of the times...

Question concerning newest Panasonic recorder

Hello to all forum members. I would like to have your thoughts (especially DWStrickland's) concerning the latest UJ-845-B DVD recorder (http://www.dfwdepot.com/osc/product_...roducts_id=232). Can someone confirm that this slot type model is fully compatible with Aspire 1714 notebook? I hate the idea of spending money to buy it and realise later that is not compatible. By the way, are you aware of other retailers that sell this recorder apart from DFWDepot? Your opinion is highly appreciated.
