All of you guys that had the LCD problem, have you enabled or disabled the light detection from the BIOS?
Hmmz, strange... the only option i can find is the auto dim on/off function. Or are these the same?

Spiros -

I currently have the Panasonic UJ-830 model in my Aspire 1710 and it works flawlessly. However, I had a Panasonic Multi Recorder to begin with so the bezel matched perfectly and was able to swap. I probably will purchase the UJ-840 model once available. It is the exact same as my UJ-830 drive except that it also offers 2.4x DL capabilities.

The UJ-845 is the same as the UJ-840 expect that it is slot loading. That drive should fit and work fine. However, since the optical drive bezel is round on the edges of the Aspire 1710, you will most likely have a slight amount of empty space on both sides of the drive.

Hi guys, its been a long long time since I have posted here but I would like to update how my 1712 is doing. In one word: bad.

My barricuda HDD drive failed on me about 2 months ago so I went out and bought a 120 gig WD. That was slightly frustrating but I got over it.

Now the bad part is that it seems that my GPU has bit the dust. When I turn my Aspire on now it won't boot. The screen just shows lots of skinny vertical red lines with just a black screen behind them. Argh. This is such a shame because I love this notebook so much. The screen is by far the best screen I have ever seen. Now I have to get in touch with Acer to get this fixed. Luckily its still under warranty until May.

Anyone know what number I can use to contact to get this thing fixed?
Thanks

In the mean time, I am gonna build a computer. Anyone know any any good computer hardware parts websites besides Newegg? thanks again.

I thought Seagate got reliable HDD's . Use your warranty & get new one

Acer @ 1-800-816-2237

Just use google or try pricegrabber
You will find it tons of them

good luck

Found some more info about the 3a25 bios:

But what do they mean with this: "Contents 1. Turn on fan when ec flash destroy".

Hmmz, just forget my stupid remark above. Looks like bios NOT for Aspire 1710 series. (removed link).

Just flashed the old 3A20 Bios, but see no changes in CPU temperatures. So going back to 3A25.

If it is just your GPU that has the problem, then you should not be worried. That is an easy part to replace in the Aspire 1710 since it is easily removable and could be performed yourself by just having Acer send the part to you under warranty. As far as hard drives, that is the nature of that technology. That can happen to any system.

Depending on the country you are in, you may still be able to extend your warranty to 3 year standard or 3 year total notebook protection.

Hehe, but you still can't complain about your temps. Her are mine

Looked at your pic, did you take your battery out? I have a feeling that charging the battery also raises the cpu temperature.

Hey man , you got 10ºC on CPU more than me .
You got Northwood too, right ?
You gonna need something like Arctic Silver 5 & refit your CPU , so you gonna be 100% sure of 99% contact your CPU with heatsink , or you gonna need some cooling pad to cool down your lappy
I know i got his CPU
Yeah right , i redo my CPU compound day after , just make sure , nah i used fine sandpaper & clean my heatsink ,, i forgot do that in 1st time

Battery i charged only once & took out & never put it back since.

@ Pingu
Be a bit more precise, what brand and type do you have?
