I am also interested in finding out if the Maxtor is good to go with the 16mb buffer since I am looking to do this too. I believe someone did try this before, and it didnt work if I remember right. Problem is no further info was posted to indicate whether it was the 16mb buffer or something else. I also like to hear if anyone has used PC3700 memory. Hope someone could help here....

That's was me . It just don't works for me
About that RAM, the MOBO does not support more than PC3200 & i don't think you are gonna O'C your CPU because our limited cooling can't handle that much heat.
You can try ultra low latency RAM ( if they gonna work ) , but they cost double

Thanks for the reply ZZtop. Do you know if the Maxtor didnt work because of the 16mb buffer or was something else going on? I guess I will be looking for Kingston or corsair 3200 matched pairs.

No problem

You know , it can happend
But i did try like 6 others HDD & that SATA , which is no way to connect to MOBO , but IDE works @ll of them but that 16 MB buffer not.
So ?
I did try WD , Maxtor & Seagate .

But you can still try it your self , if not gonna work return back & we are gonna know what's up

What a wonderful forum. I got the bluetooth card using the guidance from dwstrickland (thank you very much). It has been very nice. I have a love/hate relationship with this computer. Screen is big and beautiful and it is wonderfully powerful, but much too bulky and heavy. I had the flickering screen problem once. One of the first times I used it on battery and it drained down to 10%, the screen started flickering. After restarting and recharging I haven't ever seen it again. The first week of usage the area where the Acer logo is at the bottom of the screen got really hot, but doesn't any more. Keep up the great posts. Thanks much!

A note regarding the bluetooth card, Acer wouldn't acknowledge the existence of the card, or the part number posted by dwstrickland. It was only through the company recommended by dwstrickland that I was able to get the correct part number, which worked. Thanks.

HEY ZZTOP...

Do you remember by chance the EXACT model number of the Maxtor HD that you tried? The reason I ask is that there apparently are a couple of models. I found one with part number 6B300R0 that SHOULD (or hopefully) work. This HD is listed as 300gb/7200rpm/IDE/ATA133/16mb buffer. I just cant grasp why this will not work in the 1714 I have. Just dont want to throw around $$$.

You still got a chance if & i did it something wrong
Take look here http://notebookforums.com/showpost.p...postcount=1159

Is faster , might be a more cooler ( 2-4ºC will be nice ) 47ºC its not gonna happend ,,,,,,,,,,,,expect 50ºC+ ,,,, but after heavy HDD using from 55ºC+ will cool down in short time , on WD stays temp loooong time.
& access time on Seagate is longer than on WD , but 11MB/s more will win the race
Anyway Seagate is more noisy , not much , but more than WD
But got 5 years waranty & is cheap ( $80+ AR )
I think new gen. Seagate 7200.8 is a bit faster , but more expensive than old .

I open my Lappy at least 25 times just lid , put in / pull out HDD at least 40times + , my screws are ready to be replace & i did use brand new screwdriver correct size. I got in there physical 8 pc. HDD already & i'm not thinking try 9-th in there . Too bad what works as external might not work as internal
HDD change is project about 12 min , but i got it enough & i'm tired do the same think over & over again & i got no new screws anyway .

Hi I'm new to This forum but I have red the pages and I was wondering if someone could help me out with a small problem I'm having with my 1712. I just purchased and installed a 400GB Hitachi Deskstar laptop with these specs:
400 GB space
Average Seek Time: 8.5 ms
Buffer Size: 8 MB
Rotational Speed: 7200 RPM
Interface: IDE ULTRA ATA133
Form Factor: 3.5"

but for some reason my laptop only recognizes 192GB of storage for this Hard drive. Does anyone have any info that might help me fix this problem. I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance

What BIOS version are you running? I have the Hitachi DeskStar 400GB installed and it works flawlessly with the full ~373GB detected in Windows XP. The lastest BIOS version is 3A25 and is available from both Acer USA and Acer Europe support sites.

Hi guys.

Need a little help with the TV-out.

I connected my 1714 with a THOMSON 29'' TV. I used a S-VHS to S-VHS cable. No scart adapters or anything. A simple S-VHS to S-VHS cable. My output in the TV is black n white.
I tried every possible compination of Pal and NTSC but without luck. Always the TV is black n white. Also I changed from the advanced settings the output from autodetect to s-video. No luck.

I use the 76.10 drivers.

Any suggestions???
