Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 62

Ok. Problem fixed. Well, I don't think it was a problem at all. The Tv had a channel for AV and a channel for AV-S. I used the AV channel. With the AV-S I have colours.
Sorry for the trouble.

DVR-Drive

The DVR Writer is the 1714 seems to be a Matshita UJ-820S which writes DVDs at 2.4x.

Does anyone have a firmware upgrade to increase the speed to 4x or beyond?

Thanks
If you use DVD-r it will burn at 4x, but if you use DVD+r it will burn at 2.4x...

Thanks Alex3299.

Do you know the speeds for RW disks by any chance?

Thanks

Hey all, I've been on and off this board several times over the last 6 months, reading through this encyclopedia. I picked up a 1711 in December based on this thread. I use it for audio production with Nuendo and I'd like to test my system to see what kind of load it will take. I'm also going to be looking to see if has the 64mb video card or not. I'm not real sure. I'm doubting it because one time when I actually did play a game, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I could only run it at the lower resolutions and I still got some of the flickering and what not.

Anyway, not being a gamer, how can I test out my system to see what I can expect from a recording standpoint? Thanks for all your info and insight!

Jonathan

Acer 1711 P4 2.8/ 512RAM/ 80gb HD

Also, is the Nvidia Geforce Go 5700 the only card that we can upgrade to? Just looking for something less than the $283.

Sorry for the delay.

I didn't try a DVD yet, but it shows avi just fine.

I use the media player classic.

As I wrote before, my TV has two channels, one for composite and scart input (AV), and one for s-video input (AV-S). I use a s-video to s-video cable. If I choose the AV channel, I have no colors and it can display videos ( in black n white) only with media player classic, with any other player I have no video display. If I choose the AV-S channel, I have colors, and the videos are playing with any player.

I dont know much about audio production but to test out your overall system i would recommend PcMark 2004 found Here or Sisoftware Sandra Found here

Yes the GO 5700 is the only GPU you can upgrade to on the 1710 series.

DWStrickland and other members of the group, I need your advices concerning the following issues:

a) Below you can find links with pictures of my 1714SMi laptop's UJ-820S multi drive (sorry for the blurry image but it was taken with my mobile phone) and of the newest UJ-845B multi drive. As you can see from the arrows, UJ-820S tray has curved edges. On the other hand UJ-845B is a slot drive and has square edges. Does this mean that I will encounter compatibility problems if I try to install the latter in my laptop? Please I need accurate answers since I don't have any intention to throw $150.
UJ-820S (1714SMi)
UJ-845B (Upgrade)

b) According to the information that was given in this forum, the fastest compatible memory chip for 1710 laptops is the 2GB Kit HyperX DDR, correct? Do you know if there is something better available on the market? Even if I decide to spend nearly $650 for this memory upgrade, how much improvement should I expect, considering that I don't play demanding 3D games (only strategic ones sometimes) and I use my laptop mainly to watch movies and to deal with multimedia stuff? 10%, 20% or maybe better?

Thank you for your answers.

You SHOULD be able to install the Uj-845 drive but you will have space due to the curved edges. Someone in this forum installed a square NEC drive with no problem (except for the space and change in color of the bezel). Your other option would be to wait for the UJ-840 drive to become available and simply swap bezels on the drives since they are both Panasonic drives and would use the same bezel (icons would be the same on the bezel since they are both Multi Recorder drives).

As far as memory, the Kingston HyperX kit would be the best kit overall in my opinion if purchasing name brand performance memory. Corsair XMS memory would also be a good option.

Dear DWStrickland, well, I don't think that UJ-840 will make any difference since:

a) it's already available (at least in Panasonic Europe: http://www.panasonic-industrial.com/..._l2/index.html)

b) as you can see it continues to have square edges in the tray (what a disappointment!)

d) it lacks the writing performance of UJ-845B (10X CD-RW Writing UJ-840 vs 16X Speed CD-RW Writing UJ-845B)

So the question is why someone would interest to buy UJ-840 since UJ-845 is better and with less extended parts (like the tray that could brake if it opens accidentally)? Does anyone know if there is available a special part with round edges that could replace the front view of UJ-845B? Btw which forum member installed the square NEC drive?

Concerning the memory issue (upgrading 1 GB default memory with 2GB Kingston HyperX DDR 400) please clarify how much performance difference shall I expect to notice (having in mind that I'm not dealing with games)? 10%, 20% or better?
The UJ-840 and UJ-845 are the exact same drive, except one is tray loading and the other is slot loading. As far as the square edges, it would ship with the square bezel, but you would simply remove it (3 screws) and swap it with the bezel from the UJ-820 or UJ-830 drive since all drives are designed with the same positioning of the eject button, light, etc.

update :

After a long wait and a lot of phone-calls to Acer support and office, finaly some good news.
My 1711 smi is gonna be replaced with a brand new Aspire 1801 wsmib. This one also got a 17" screen, but it's widescreen. I think it's gonna take some time to get used to that, but what the hell. I only hope that this 1801, a little smaller, lighter (4,5 kg) and almost half the height, is more reliable then the 1710 series was/is.
It will be delivered this week, i'll keep you updated.

I'm so ****ing pissed right now. A lot of blabla from Acer that i would get a new labtop this week after waiting for a whole month, but still nothing. Anyone now a place where to buy loads of C4? Before this i thought Acer's service was good, but i'll have to eat my words now.

CIao Fratello!
Hi All, First post for me.

My note is a 1714smi, 2Giga Ram 120ATA
I clocked it at 3400@3650Mhz ( I need power for 3dsmax)
Gpu 499/689 ( Quadro 1400FX forced)
Very Sable.

Cpu temp In max Load: 69'
Hd temp :59'

Bench: aquamark 30542.

The notebook is fantastic! 2x 3dsMax7 in Render + photoshop 8 + acad2005 + Realviz Image Modeller, and I can work well !

Opening the bottom of the pc, I noticed that the CPU is installed without any dissy!!??! Only direct air flow from the fan. Is this Correct? Can I use a copper dissy?

Last: I need a software to rise up The Vcore ( +0.5 and the the will work fine at 3700/3800MHz) but i Can't find it.

Rockberto: I'll try to find where to buy the uj-840, I'm interested too.

Hi all. Maxx
