The latest version 3A25. Your suspision on the BIOS may be right because the same memory modules installed on a desktop with ASUS motherboard using Intel 865x chipsets runs at full speed. I hope that it is just a BIOS issues and also hope that Acer to fix it soon

hi jorg, the largest capacity graphics memory the 1710 series can take is the geforce 5700 128mb. No other cards for the 1710 series apart from the smaller 64mb version have been or will ever be made for this machine seeing as it is now discontinued. No other fit in this machine so you'll have to live with the 128

1711 Service manual

Hi all!

I'm (almost happy owner of 1711 SCI, having several problems previously described in this great topic, such as replaced (so far once) %$$% inverter or overheating CPU.. After getting finnaly to the last page, I decided to do something good to my soon-to-be-out-of-warranty lappy. But to do so I need one more thing... DWS, could you please mail me your url to 1711 service manual (meehaw@poczta.onet.pl)? After trying to pull out keybord I'm getting desperate

BTW, the inverter problem is probably something more than it may seem from previous posts... I bougth my lappy in USA, hovewer I live in Poland and my inverter was replaced here... And after a month the blinking started again... It was in february and after one week of fear the problem naver happened again , but I still live in fear . I guess that inverters all over the world MAY have that problem.. But IMHO it's because of high temperature (at least im mine) - so I believe in the end it IS some kind of tech mistake...

Mike, look through the topic. There's a link somewhere to a very detailed manual.... Don't have the manual anymore cause it stood on my old HD. Your problem is a world wide and is more a design mistake as a technical mistake. The 1700 serie was taken out of production after being there for only about a year, so that says enough i think....

a friend of mine send me the panasonic uj-840 from japan, first of all I can't use the same bezel of my dvd drive, second, but not the last..... the notebook don't recognize the drive uj-840!!!!!

There are two links, but first one is for user manual (not so useful with this particular problem) and the second one is for only Chapter 6 (FRU), and I need whole manual .

And taking 17xx out of production might be solution for Acer, but not for me.. I really like this machine, and I would like it to serve me a bit longer...

BTW, I checked my CPU temp - and it's ~60 degrees after 5 minutes of idle. WTF? Hope this is only lack of thermal paste - I THINK I am able to put some on CPU without actually destroying something... (any hints would be welcome ).

Ok, take care with pulling off the CPU cooler. Be sure to lift it off straight and gently. Cause in the 2 times i did it, the cpu was still stuck on the cooler. My heart skipped a beat but, lucky me, the pins where not bend. And first read the manual on the Artic Silver site. http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

I know that there is previous post about this but I don't remember if there is any resolution. Anyone have DDR400 installed and can verify that if it is running at full speed. Thanks.

Heat...

Big THX, Bazzio. I yesterday did replace compound on CPU (it was some silicon-like, sticky white shit) with Arctic Silver V. For now there is no difference in temps, due their site I should see the effects by the next couple of days.

But I don't really believe that the compound itself can reduce temp from ~62 to ~45... What may be other reason for thin thing overheating so badly? Fans are working properly, I can hear it .

A cpu-cooler replacement helped a bit, but the most temp. decrease i've got was by placing the notebook on two wooden beams. I've used a 2 cm thick beam on the back an a 1cm thick one on the front. That dropped my temps. about 10 °C. Another thing you can check is what type CPU you're using. Is it a Northwood or a Prescott. A Prescott got a higher working temp. than a Northwood. You can use CPU-Z for that, just google for a download link.

Ram

Question about ram:

I've got 512 MB (2x256mb so-dimm) PC2700(166) memory with 533 mhz busspeed. CPU-Z gives a frequency of 106.4 mhz and a FSBRAM ratio of 5:4.
So my memory is working on 64% of its capacity?!? If i buy two PC3200(200) 512 mb sticks will my ratio than go to 1:1? Or will it go to another ratio, but wich one? As far as i know there isn't a way to change the ratio in the Acer BIOS.

What's your FSB speed? 133 mhz, i guess.

The FSB is 200 Mhz and hence the 5:4 ratio memory speed instead the expected 1:1 ratio.

Hi.

I tried everything you mentioned... I have Northwood, I put the unit on 2 cm legs made from lego blocks , in cool room, on wooden table, with AS V - and I got 56 degrees . This really suxx, I don't know what else might be the problem.. I can't afford sending it to Acer right now (work..). Anyway, big THX for help, Bazzio !

BTW, Where is DWS with my manual ...?

does anyone know a driver that will work well on my acer 1710 gfx5700 im still currently running the original windows driver please paste a link or web to download from thanks and is there any perfomance increase
post #1280 of 1526
FYI - I've been running the Hitachi 400GB /8MB drive in mine for more than a month now.
Works fine.

Every 10 minutes or so it has a faint, increasing sound like the drive is being accessed a lot.
Gets louder for about 4 seconds, then stops. A few minutes later, happens again.
You wouldn't notice it unless you were sitting there and the system was idle. Curious, but
not really annoying. It only gets about as loud as a normal drive access.

The drive is slightly noisier than the Seagate. I could never hear the Seagate, but the Hitachi
I can hear being accessed. About the same sound level you'd hear from a good desktop -
very little.

Haven't run any performance specs. Doesn't seem appreciably faster.

The thing that DID make a perceptible performance increase was changing to memory that
allows 1:1 timing.
