Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 66

Hmmmm, I am quite worried about this thing with the inverter. A lot of people experience this problem and that is most unfortunate.

Should I suppose that most of us will have this problem during let's say, two years of operation?

I am not a rich guy and I invested a lot of money on this laptop (which I love).

And the money for the extended warranty are robbery.

Just a few days ago I purchased a digital oscilloscope for 2500 Euro and do you know how much costs the extended 48 months warranty? 50 Euro.

And 500 for up to two components? Are they serious? I don't understand these "big" companies. I suppose these prices are used to discourage people from giving their products for service.

Pioneer has released the DVR-K15 Slim dvd-rw. I was thinking purchasing it and swaping that black bazels but it seems that the buzy light and the eject button are placed differently. This should be a problem right? Also in Acer 4151LMI which has it in it (as DVR-K15RA), it's also with the square ends. Any way I can trim or modify the bazel of K15's? My K13 shows marks of bad health and also can't read most 8x dvd-rs that my desktop Plextor 716SA writes.

Info: Pioneer DVR-K15 8X Slim DL Laptop DVD-RW Drive

Also I think getting AcerAdvantage as I hear a lot of problems with lcd screen (don't want to pay a huge amount later!). I haven't passed one year since I've purchased the laptop. Before I get AcerAdvantage, I should register it, right? Where? Only sending the included questionare and I'm fine?

panther, i would assume that 95% or more of the 17xx's made by acer are perfectly fine, with no defects to the screen, i had mine repaired by acer in uk for the flashing and hissing of the screen and they did it within 5 days and it has never shown any problems since, so i wouldnt just assume your machine has a problem since almost all of the machines they make are fine. Otherwise we'd see alot more people in here wingeing about their machines.

Well, I agree with you kryten16, I am just a little worried.

From previous posts I saw that the quality of ACER's service and responce varies from bad to excellent.

I had a very bad experience in the past and I don't want something similar to happen with the laptop.

When the DVD players ( for TV) appeared in the market, I purchased a xxx ( I don't want to write the brand as I don't want to advertise them, but it is a very very famous company) DVD player for 500 Euro (at that time they were quite expensive). After exactly one year of operation the DVD broke down and destroyed a DVD disk that I had rent. Of course I had to pay for the disk to the Video-club (20 Euro).

I went to their service center and after one week they called me to go and pick up the fixed DVD player. It costed 125 Euro!!! When I looked at the receipt, it said that the only thing that they changed was a DC stabilizer in the power section of the PCB (those things cost at most 20 Euro)!!!

And when I asked them for the rediculous price, they told me that this is their policy: 125 Euro for the service no matter what is the malfunction.

After a week the dvd broke again, exacty the same way, again destroying a DVD disk that I had rented. I paid again for the disk and I went furious with the player to the company's service center. They said that they would fix it for free because the part that they replaced had 1 year warranty.

2 days afterwards they called me to inform me that this time another component malfunctioned and that if I wanted to have the player fixed, I would have to pay another 125 Euro! The same symptoms with the previous malfunction was simply a cuincidence (in their opinion)!!!!!

I never saw again them or the DVD-player.

What program did you use to check the CPU temp?
Where can I download the program you used?

Well, I tried pulling the inverter out myself but I started getting a little sketchy when I was about to take the LCD apart. I haven't done one before and the service manual that I had was of no help. I decided to just order the inverter separately and have someone here in town install it. It saves me the headache of shipping and a little cost. So the inverter should be here in a few days and I will hopefully be all ready to go.

What's making these things burn out? Is there something that I can do to keep from going through this again?

Got good earplugs?, you'll need them!!! First try Artic Silver 5 and raise your laptop with 2 cm on the back an 1 cm on the front. Mobile Meter is the program you're looking for, just de a google search.

Maxtor

Yes, Mobilemeter is a very good program!

I've installed a Maxtor 10 Ata 133 300Gb 16Mb cache and works fine ( only random slow performance on buffered read bench, hd tatch 13mbsec ( then 70 mb/sec ) Sandra 60 Mb/sec )

Sequential read starts from 68-70 Mb /sec

The disk is very very fast!

Yep about to add the Artic Silver ... thanks for the name of the program I need.

I have also run into this tank not booting up correctly. At times it just won't even post the bios ... is this heat related.
It seem when it won't post and I shut it off and turn it on again with the front of it tipped up at 45 degrees then it will post/boot. Any others experience this ?

Modem Problems on the AS1712SMi

I just got done reloading XP Pro with SP2
and the first acer driver I tried to load was the Modem Driver Agere Ver. 2.1.33.0 (08/20/2003). In the Device manager everthing looks good ... no conflicts; however, when I go to properies on the modem and try to do an Diagnostic-->Query Modem I get a messsage "Opencom", "The port the modem is attached could not be opened. This may be the result of a hardware conflict. Check the device manager to verify all devices are functional." Any ideas on what is going on here. If I were to try and use the modem I get the same message.
Any help or direction in fixing this would be great.

Thanks,

Bazzio,

I put the AS5 on and raised the Tank a good 1/2" on the Front and 3/4" on the back. My temps are 41°C for case and Harddrive. That is at ideal after just turning it on as per Mobile Meter.

But how can I get the Fans to run on high at will?

Is the AC/DC Inverter something that either I can do or another computer repair center can do? Thx.
Can you post the phone numbers of the places you can get the invertor?

So where did you order the replacement invertor from?
How much did it cost?

My screen just went "dark" about two nights ago. Could you give me the info on how you ordered your inverter? I tried emailing Acer and Newegg (where I bought the refurb 1712 from) and no response.

I can still see my desktop when I turn all the lights out in the room. I tried fiddling with the Fn keys, and get an occasional flicker of light, but no real luck.

Does anyone know if it is a common part on the inverter that is blowing? A resistor or diode or such. Does anyone have dissassembly pics or links?

If I get this inverter, I will photo and post it step-by-step as I do the repair.
