Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 69

No, I haven't try it.
It could be the drivers or even the game.
For example when I first tried Deus Ex 2, the game was so slow, that it was completely unplayable. After a while, they gave a patch that solved the performance trouble. Now it plays just fine.

OSX86 on Acer.... for REAL...

OK...

Im sure you've all been keeping up on the news about the torrents on piratesbay... well for the last 5 days I have been trying to get MAX OSX on my ACER 1712 and I did it.

Problem...

I had to use the patch for SSE2 because my Northwood isn't SSE3 which is the IDEAL chip for running OSX on Intel.

So, what chip is SSE3 that will work in this 1712?

Let me know and I will get it installed and then report back with the howto's and even get an Image file optimized for the Acer if anyone else wants to run OSX.

Notice: You will need to own a REAL copy of the TIGER DVD to install.

Hey all, well my 1710 is not booting. I've been told it's a bad Mobo. I've decided to upgrade and have already ordered a pimped out Dell 9300. I'm selling this 1710 basically for parts at $390 if anybody's interested. I've also got a brand new AC adapter that I purchased from Acer still in the box that I'll sell for $75 shipped. Email me at jonathantpayne@gmail.com if you're interested. Thx.

Hi guys.

I've upgraded to a bigger hard disk (250gb seagate 7200.8). The hard disk is seen correctly by the motherboard & bios.

I tried to make a o.s. installation from Acer's backup disks but with no luck. The cd boots, checks something for about 2 minutes and then displays error. It seems that it is searching something from the hard disk. I have checked the old h.d. and it has a hidden extended partition with some files in it. It's ~8MB. Do I need to copy that partition to the new h.d. for the backup installation to work?

Currently, I have ghosted old h.d.'s 1st partition into the new h.d. and it is working ok, but I would like to make a clean install.

Long time no see...

I was finally able to solve overheating problem, inverter still works... And of course my vido card fan is dead now (bearing didn't make it ). Currently I'm in US, and I'm wondering if any of you guys (and girls ) knows what's the cheapest way to get either fan or whole card (and what's the price). I don't need card with 128 MB ram, so if any of you have replaced card with the faster one, any chance of selling the old one to me? Good luck with your tanks

Hi to everyone!!

A few days ago my 1714 ended one year of continuous operation, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. About 8600-8700 hours of operation.
But exactly when the one-year warranty ended, one minor problem occured.
One of the two cpu fans, makes a very annoying sound. A high frequency really annoying sound.
Now, I opened the laptop, cleaned it, removed the two-fan combo unit and checked it, but I didn't find anything. The sound continues. And it gets in my nerves.
Does anyone know if these fans are custom made for ACER, or I can find them in a store and change them???
Are you sure it's your CPU-fan? It could be your inverterboard that's making the noise.

Hi Bazzio!

Fortunately (I think), is the fan. I opened the laptop's base and turned on the computer. It's the small fan that is near the power cord. Something inside it got loose and when it rotates it makes this horrible sound. At first was a high frequency sound. Now after 50 hours of operation since the problem occured, the sound is of much lower frequency. It is like the fan is shaking when it rotates. To double check it, I removed the power from the fans and turned on the laptop. No annoying sound, but the temperature was rising very fast (of course).
I sent an e-mail to ACER to purchase the fan but no reply yet.
So, I searched on the net and I found the fan maker which is AVC. And I was very lucky to find that these fans are not custom made for ACER, but they are among their standard products. So I e-mailed them and asked to buy the specific fan. I sent the e-mail today, so I am waiting for their answer.

OK, the fan died.....
The good thing is that the annoying noise died too.
The strange thing is that the temperatures remain rock-stable with CPU temp at 48 in idle mode and 68 when its very busy.

I took the fan off and now I will wait for the part from avc.

I have been trying to get this drive to work with the 1710 and it is not recognised in the Bios. I have the Latest Bios. Which Jumper setting does it like (I believe I have tried them all) The Drive just shows up Blank or un recognised. You can hear it ty to access itself. I will try it in a desktop today to see if it just isn't a faulty drive.

Are you talking about 250gb seagate 7200.8? Yes, you must put the jumper as master otherwise bios doesn't see it. Don't be fooled by the fact your previous drive has no jumper on it.

One tip before making the swap (you can see my prev post). Find a usb2 hdd frame, put the new hd in it, connect it to laptop and use norton ghost to make an exact copy of your old hd's partitions. Recovery cds don't work for a new empty hd, at least for me.

Hard Drive problems

Sorry about that... I was refering to the Hitachi 7k400 .

I think it is just a bad drive out of the box...

I placed it in both the 1712 and a new Dell server and neither system could read the drive in the bios.

Connecting power only to the drive, the drive will spin up normally then It will make noises 1-2 seconds in length as if data access is going on and this does not stop. I have never seen a drive make this kind of noise with only power connected.

I have another coming on tuesday so I will let you know how things go.

I recently purchased 2 cheap 1gig sticks. I ordered PC2700 to make sure it was compatible but then they send me two sticks of PC3200 with a note saying free upgrade.

Been running it for two weeks, no crashes the memory is recognised as PC3200/ 200mhz. Think I dodged a bullet ? Or could I be in for problems I haven't figured on ?

MP3's on HDD/CD's won't autoplay while LiD is shut...

Hi, ALL!

Great forum! But I've got a problem:

A few months after receiving the Aspire 1712 laptop after I bought it, I called in to the Acer tech support about the issue of the Audio DJ not playing my CD's or MP3's on the HDD, while powered off. I was told (after she asked me how it was working originally) that it was only supposed to work for MP3 CD's. I never wanted the hassle of doing this so I accepted her answer and never really looked back.
But recently I really wanted to hear my normal audio CD's without turning the PC on and went to the Acer website and downloaded the new Acer 1710 series manual, in which it was stated that the normal audio CD's along with MP3 files on my hard disk could all be played without opening and turning on the laptop. This is what I originally remember it doing soon after I first bought it, as I accidentally played the default music (briefly) that came pre-installed on the Acer HDD.

I've already tried turning the Audio DJ on and off from Windows XP via Fn+F9 keys, which seems to work just fine in Windows XP SP2 gui. This problem began even b4 I installed SP2. I've read the (new) manual over and again, following is instructions but still cannot get it to work. I've tried updating to the latest BIOS (3A25) after I bought it. I've made no other hardware changes.

What does happen is that when I have the laptop closed (i've also tried it with the laptop open but powered OFF) I press the play/pause button (while a normal audio CD is in the DVD drive, and I've tried many working CD's) the fan starts up and the LED lights up for several seconds and then it just powers off --I've even tried pressing the '<<' & '>>' buttons. What is it searching for? Is it controlled by the BIOS or ROM or what? I don't normally have system crashes or anything as it's been very stable for the amount of use involved.

I asked ACer about it and they suggested I restore w/their CD's. Well, I've got way too much on my hands/hdd to worry about that.

I remember renaming the original music/mp3 folder.... Maybe this is the issue? Can someone send me a copy of the original music folder that came with the Acer 1712?

Thanx in advance!

Create a folder in root c:\ named "My MP3". Place your mp3s there and they should play with audiodj.

Also, give a shot to the newer ver of audiodj (than the one came with your pc).

Thanks GDion!

I've got that folder and when I tried to install the latest AudioDJ U linked, I chose to 'Repair' and not 'Modify' or 'Remove'. so I guess I had that version installed already.

Were there no other files in that original folder?

Hello to everyone. It's been a while since my last post.

As I told you, I received from AVC the fan and changed it myself. Problem solved.

Now a little other problem.

I use Nero 6.6.

From today, when I try to write a DVD, I get the message "PMA update failure". Can anyone help me out? I use Creation DVD-R and I didn't have problems before.
